Take the heart of Shitan coal from Heyang; if unavailable, use only those that are bright and pure. Grind into powder, take with newly drawn cool water, and bleeding will stop immediately. Another method for treating epistaxis: for left-sided epistaxis, plug the right ear; for right-sided epistaxis, plug the left ear. This is miraculous and has been personally verified by me.
Use Mao Hua (Reed Flower); do not substitute with roots. Take a large handful per dose, chop it, add two bowls of water, and decoct until concentrated to one bowl of liquid. Divide into two doses. When Lin Cizhong, the Censor, was in Chuzhou, he visited an old friend who did not emerge for a long time. When asked, he was told: "My daughter-in-law is suffering from severe epistaxis and nearly bled to death; we are attending to her emergency and cannot receive guests." A guest at the table said: "I happen to have medicine." He urgently ordered a large handful of Mao Hua to be decocted into one bowl of strong liquid. From his pouch, he took two small red pills and instructed the patient to swallow them with the Mao Hua tea. One dose resulted in recovery. When asked about the prescription, he refused to say. Later, someone remarked: "This is merely the efficacy of Mao Hua." Upon further inquiry, the man laughed loudly and said: "Indeed so. The red pills are Hanxiang Zhusha Wan (Incense-Containing Cinnabar Pill). I used them as a marker because I doubted you would believe the efficacy of Mao Hua alone." While I was in Yanzhou, a military officer suffered from severe epistaxis and was critically ill. Treatment with this method led to immediate recovery. Additionally, Xu Dezhao taught that for epistaxis, one should urgently moxa the acupoint Wanxue located between the two tendons at the back of the neck at the hairline, three moxa cones, which stops bleeding immediately. It is believed that blood enters the brain and flows into the nose from this area. Even ordinary people can stop epistaxis by tying a string around the back of the head; thus, this moxibustion method is undoubtedly effective.
Da Ji Gen (Radix Cirsii Japonici, 1 liang) Xiang Si Zi (Semen Abrus, 0.5 liang)
For each dose, take 1 qian of the mixture, add 1 jin of water, decoct to 0.7 jin, remove the dregs, let cool, and take orally. The daughter of Wang Chaosan suffered from severe epistaxis for one day, became unconscious and unrecognizable, causing her family to panic and weep. All medications failed. Someone transmitted this prescription; one dose stopped the bleeding.
Zao Jiao (Gleditsiae Fructus, peeled and burned until smoke ceases) Bai Fan (Alumen, boiled until solidified) Huai Hua (Flos Sophorae, stir-fried until yellow-black) Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried, equal parts of each)
Grind all into powder. For each dose, take 2 qian, mix with warm water, and take orally. Li Shijun of Jiaxing once suffered from vomiting. After every meal, he vomited. This persisted for two months. Medications for regurgitation made the condition worse. Some suggested phlegm-fluid retention and administered Banxia Xuanshu Tang (Pinellia and Inula Decoction), but it was ineffective. Le Pangguan, a staff member, provided this prescription. He recovered immediately after taking it. An old maid-servant also suffered from vomiting; after taking this prescription, she too recovered. Generally, vomiting is mostly caused by heat in the diaphragm. Heat generates phlegm. This prescription can resolve hot phlegm-saliva in the stomach and diaphragm, showing remarkable efficacy.
