(Also treats tetanus and all wind syndromes)
Treats Shanghan (Cold Damage). Releases the exterior and relieves headache.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, six liang, remove nodes, scald with boiling water, remove yellow juice, bake dry) Wutou (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, soak in water for three days, change water frequently, remove skin, sun-dry, process, remove umbilicus) Tiannanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma, crush separately) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, one liang, honey-fried) Shexiang (Moschus, one fen) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, wash seven times with hot water) Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, wrap in mud, burn until red-hot, grind; above four ingredients each four liang) Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, three liang) Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum, half liang; only use borneol from camphor wood, do not use borneol from southern or foreign sources)
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Boil Tiannanxing in water to make pills, sized like small marbles. Take one pill per dose, chew and swallow with scallion-tea or wine. Peppermint tea is also acceptable; take consecutively for two to three doses. This formula was originally my family's "Bailong Wan" (White Dragon Pill), which has been included in the *Lingyuan* text. Later, Mahuang was added up to six liang. Coated with Hanshuishi (Cryolithum) and Shigao, it is excellent for treating Shanghan; mild wind-cold colds are cured immediately upon taking it. Among exterior-releasing formulas, this one is particularly swift and miraculous.
For cases where toxicity causes sudden collapse and unconsciousness that cannot be saved:
Roadside hot soil Garlic
Take roughly equal amounts of the above, pound and grind thoroughly, mix with cold water, strain the dregs, and drink the liquid. The patient will recover. This prescription was found on the city gate of Pei County in Xuzhou. It was pounded by a person named Banshu; who applied it is unknown.
For multiple ulcerating sores, or sores caused by scratching: Lin Caizhong once fell ill while lying down during summer heat, with many sores on his skin oozing fluid.
A wet nurse said, "This is easy to cure." Take dry wall soil, rub it into fine powder, and apply it to the affected area. It heals instantly upon application.
Jixinbangle (Arecae Semen, heart-shaped variety) Chenju pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, remove white pith, two liang each) Qingmuxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) Renshen (Ginseng Radix) Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) Guanzi gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove tasteless parts) Da Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) Jing Sanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma) Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, fried) Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, sliced and lightly stir-fried) Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, five qian each) Qianniuzi (Pharbitidis Semen, one liang)
Grind the above fifteen ingredients into powder, store in a porcelain vessel, and seal tightly. Before administration, mix two liang of Qianniuzi powder with one liang of the medicinal powder, grind them together evenly, and form pills with honey, sized like paulownia seeds. Indications include abdominal distension and fullness, all types of wind-lao (chronic deficiency) and cold qi, stabbing pain below the navel, vomiting clear water and white foam, acid regurgitation. Masses due to phlegm-stasis, male kidney wind-toxicity. Pain attacking the four limbs, and yang-du Hong Kong jiao (gout). Blurred vision, headache, nausea in the chest/heart region, and hardness/fullness in the hypochondrium that does not resolve. Take thirty pills at bedtime with Tangerine Peel Decoction. Use bowel movement as the criterion for efficacy; thereafter, take twenty pills every night. For women with bloody dysentery, hematochezia, stabbing pain, and chronic blood masses. Stomach rebellion, vexation and heat in hands and feet, loss of appetite. Take thirty pills with Ginger Decoction. Aim for bowel movement; then take twenty more pills every night. For children over five years old with gan-qi (childhood malnutrition) causing abdominal distension and asthma, take five to seven pills on an empty stomach with warm water. Reduce the number of pills for younger children. For any case of persistent chest/abdominal fullness and indigestion, or continuous splenic diarrhea. Take with warm wine before bed to induce bowel movement. For food poisoning, carbuncles and ulcers on the back, mountain miasma (zhang qi). As soon as headache and stiffness in the back and shoulders are felt, take it immediately. Use bowel movement as the criterion. Regular consumption can prevent infection with zhang diseases. All zhang diseases are caused by excess heat in the spleen and stomach. Usually, cooling herbs are used to resolve upper jiao stagnation heat, and using this medicine to promote unblocking is even better. This pill originally treated lan-zhang (mountain miasma) and warm malaria with great effect. Li Jiaoli Dunyu often transmitted this formula and carved it on stone at Dayu Ridge; those who benefited from it are countless. My uncle served in Minzhong, often leading troops to suppress mountain bandits. When passing through Zhangpu, soldiers all contracted malaria. Using this medicine, patients recovered promptly. While I was in Jiangnan, malaria was prevalent annually. I used this medicine to help others; its efficacy was miraculous, always aiming for rapid purgation. Also recorded: for chronic malaria after finishing medication, moxa-convulse the Qihai point for one hundred burns. Then moxa-convulse the Zhongwan point for thirty burns; this is especially effective.
