Gua Di San (Melon Peduncle Powder).
In the preceding formula, Xiaohongdou (Vigna umbellata Seed) is used in the amount of one fen.
Xiaohongdang Gui San (Red Bean and Angelica Sinensis Powder).
In the preceding formula, Xiaohongdou (Vigna umbellata Seed) is used in the amount of three sheng.
Apart from the above two formulas, other formulas utilizing Xiaohongdou (Vigna umbellata Seed) do not reflect the intent of Zhang Zhongjing; therefore, they are not adopted here.
Da Jianzhong Tang (Major Construct the Middle Decoction), Xiao Jianzhong Tang (Minor Construct the Middle Decoction), Huang [Qi] Jianzhong Tang [Astragalus] Construct the Middle Decoction].
For the above three formulas, Jiaoyi (Malt Sugar/Maltose) is used in the amount of one sheng each.
Main indications: The efficacy of Jiaoyi (Malt Sugar/Maltose) is similar to that of Gancao (Licorice Root) and Fengmi (Honey); thus, it can alleviate various urgent conditions.
The syndrome of Xiao Jianzhong Tang (Minor Construct the Middle Decoction) states: "Urgent pain in the abdomen." It also mentions "internal urgency" (Li Ji). It further states: "Abdominal pain in women." The syndrome of Da Jianzhong Tang (Major Construct the Middle Decoction) states: "Pain throughout the upper and lower abdomen, intolerable to touch or pressure." The syndrome of Huang [Qi] Jianzhong Tang [Astragalus] Construct the Middle Decoction] states: "Internal urgency" (Li Ji). Based on these three formulas, Jiaoyi (Malt Sugar/Maltose) can treat internal urgency. Are abdominal urgent pain and abdominal pain not essentially internal urgency? Therefore, I say: The efficacy of Jiaoyi (Malt Sugar/Maltose) is similar to that of Gancao (Licorice Root) and Fengmi (Honey).
Ba Wei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill), Tugua Gen San (Trichosanthes Thunbergii Root Powder), Chi Wan (Red Pill), Tianxiong San (Aconitum Kochianum Powder).
The above three formulas are all administered with wine.
Xia Yuxue Tang (Descend Blood Stasis Decoction).
The preceding formula is decocted with wine.
The method of brewing wine in China differs from that in our country (Japan). However, when testing its efficacy, there is no difference. Whenever "wine" (Jiu) is mentioned alone, unfiltered clear wine (Wu Hui Qing Jiu) without ash residue should be used.
Mei Qing Jiu (Beautiful Clear Wine) is the same as that used in Mahuang Chun Jiu Tang (Ephedra Strong Wine Decoction).
In the preceding formula, Mei Qing Jiu (Beautiful Clear Wine) is used in the amount of five sheng.
Chun Jiu (Strong Wine) refers to Mei Qing Jiu (Beautiful Clear Wine); hence it is stated to be decocted with Mei Qing Jiu (Beautiful Clear Wine). Yan Shigu's commentary on the Book of Han states: "Chun Jiu (Strong Wine) is not diluted," referring to strong/concentrated wine. According to this analysis: Strong wine is the finest quality of wine; therefore, it is called Mei Qing Jiu (Beautiful Clear Wine).
Danggui Xiong [Lao] Jiao Ai Tang (Angelica, Ligusticum, Donkey-hide Gelatin, and Artemisia Leaf Decoction).
The preceding formula is decocted with a mixture of water and wine.
Li Shizhen cites the entry from Yin Shan Zheng Yao (Correct Essentials for Diet Therapy): "The clear part of wine is called 'Niang' (Fermented Brew)." The Shuo Wen Jie Zi explains: "'Niang' refers to [the process of] fermentation." Thus, clear wine should be the kind commonly consumed.
Da Zhu Dan Zhi Dao Fa (Large Pig Gallbladder Suppository Method).
The preceding formula.
Fa Cu (Method Vinegar) cannot be verified: it likely refers to vinegar brewed according to proper methods! The original text lacks the character "Fa" (Method) before "Ben" (Cost/Original).
Ku Jiu Tang (Bitter Wine Decoction), Huang [Qi] Shaoyao Guizhi Ku Jiu Tang [Astragalus], Peony, Cinnamon Twig, and Bitter Wine Decoction].
For the above two formulas, the former formula (Ku Jiu Tang) does not specify the volume measurements (Sheng/He), while the latter formula specifies one Sheng.
