Jiao-E (Donkey-Hide Gelatin), in later generations, has been said to have the function of nourishing blood. However, upon reading various materia medica works today, it is found that its indicated conditions all lie in treating blood stasis. Any chronic cough for many years, dysentery with red and white discharge accompanied by bleeding, hematemesis, hemoptysis, epistaxis, hematemesis, severe constipation in the elderly, or dribbling urination, as well as various bleeding manifestations, various abnormalities in women's menstrual flow, and diseases during pregnancy, all belong to blood stasis. Since ancient formulas record this, subsequent formulas should also be understood in this manner. Modern physicians, seeing these applications, call it a blood-nourishing drug. Although so, in my view, it can be called a drug that transforms blood (resolves blood stasis). Why do I say so? Because when Jiao-E is combined with Zhu-Ling (Polyporus), Ze-Xie (Alisma), and Hua-Shi (Talcum), it expels blood stasis through urine; when combined with Da-Huang (Rhubarb) and Gan-Sui (Kansui), it expels blood stasis through stool; when combined with Huang-Qin (Scutellaria) and Huang-Lian (Coptis), it clears the vexation in the heart caused by blood stasis; when combined with Gan-Cao (Licorice), Huang-Bai (Phellodendron), Qin-Pi (Ash Bark), and Bai-Tou-Weng (Pulsatilla), it treats heat-dysentery with tenesmus caused by blood stasis; when combined with Dang-Gui (Angelica Sinensis), Xiong-Ku (Ligusticum), Di-Huang (Rehmannia), Shao-Yao (Peony), and Ai-Ye (Mugwort Leaf), it stops abdominal pain caused by blood stasis; when combined with Bai-Zhu (Atractylodes), Fu-Zi (Aconite), and Huang-Tu (Fired Earth), it treats chills and difficulty in urination caused by blood stasis. From this perspective, how can it be called a blood-nourishing drug? Later generations only see its branches and leaves, but do not know its root. Is it not appropriate that physicians therefore treat incorrectly?
Jiao-E takes its name from those produced in A County. Among the various items imported by foreign ships today, for medicinal use, those that are yellow and transparent like amber are considered the highest grade. Those that are glossy and black like lacquer, without a leather odor, are good. If the genuine product is hard to obtain, then domestically produced hide gelatin that is yellow and transparent and does not become soft and damp in summer can be used as a substitute.

Jing refers to the non-glutinous variety of rice, also known as Jing. Luo Yuan stated: Rice, also named Jing, comes in glutinous and non-glutinous varieties. Nowadays, people call the glutinous one Nuo (glutinous rice) and the non-glutinous one Jing (indica rice).
