[Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen)]
Taste: Sour. Nature: Neutral. Toxicity: Non-toxic. It inherits the Qi of Wood and combines with the transformation of Earth to generate. Its action can ascend and descend; it is Yin within Yang. It is incompatible with Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Fangji).
[Indications] Primarily treats cold-heat pathogenic evil accumulation in the heart and abdomen, qi stagnation and mass formation. Soreness and pain of the four limbs, damp-bi syndrome. Long-term consumption calms and nourishes the Five Viscera. (From *Shennong Bencao Jing*) Treats vexation, restlessness, and insomnia. Pain above and below the umbilicus. Bone wind disease.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Kidney and Sanjiao meridians. It is a substance that clears blood heat and assists righteous Qi. (Also has purgative properties; superiorly eliminates headache due to wind, centrally soothes chest and hypochondriac pain.)
[Gouqi Miao Ye (Lycii Cortex Folium et Folium)]
Taste: Bitter, Sweet. Nature: Cold.
[Indications] Primarily removes vexation and heat. Strengthens Heart Qi. Expels wind from the skin and interosseous spaces. Eliminates heat toxicity. Disperses sores and swelling. (From *Bencao Mingyi Lu*) Prepared as an infusion to replace tea. Relieves thirst and clears heat.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Heart, Lung, Spleen, and Kidney meridians. It is a heat-clearing substance. (Also has purgative properties.)
[Preliminary Discussion] Zhao Zhichun stated: Gouqi Zi (Lycii Fructus) is moistening and tonifying, also capable of clearing heat, specifically tonifying the Kidney and Lung, generating fluids, and benefiting Qi. It is indicated for deficiency of true Yin of the Liver and Kidney.
(Note: The original text contains fragmented commentary regarding the distinction between fruit, root bark, and leaves in ancient texts like *Shennong Bencao Jing* and *Bencao Jing Shu*, noting that distinctions were made later by authors like Zhen Quan and in *Bencao Mingyi Lu*. It mentions that while ancient texts generally discuss Lycii properties, specific indications like treating women's diseases are clear. However, the leaf/stem clears Liver fire but does not enter the Lung meridian, primarily being a Kidney herb...)
[Contraindications] According to *Beiyao*: Contraindicated for those with loose stools (Gouqi Zi); contraindicated for those with middle Jiao cold (Goupi/Cortex Lycii). Freshly dug roots decocted with small thistle (Xiaojiju) into a concentrated juice, applied externally for undergang sores, is very effective.
[Preparation] Lei Gong stated: When using Lycii Root Bark, soak and scrub in flowing water from the east to remove soil, beat to remove the core, soak in Licorice Decoction overnight, then dry by baking. The above belongs to the Tonifying Agents section, Wood Category.
[Xiao Mai (Tritici Vulgaris Fructus Immaturus / Wheat)**

(From *Ri Hua Zi Bencao*)
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Heart meridian. It is a nourishing substance.
[Preliminary Discussion] Zhen Quan stated: The bran of wheat is cold, the flesh is hot. When used in decoctions, the whole grain should be used intact. Do not separate the bran. If separated, it becomes warm, and the flour loses its ability to clear heat and stop vexation.
