[Polygala Root / Pulsatilla Root] (Baitouweng)
Taste: Acrid, Bitter. Nature: Warm. Non-toxic. It is generated by absorbing the slight yang qi from the earth. Its action can ascend and descend; it belongs to yang within yin. It works best when processed with wine.
[Indications] Primarily treats warm malaria causing mania and restlessness, alternating chills and fever; zheng zha and ji ju (abdominal masses); ying qi (goiter/neck swelling); expels evil blood; stops abdominal pain; treats metal weapon wounds (Jin Chuang). (From *Shennong Bencao Jing*). Stops toxic dysentery.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Stomach and Large Intestine meridians. It is a substance that clears heat and cools blood. (Acts on the blood level of these two meridians; bitterness can firm the Kidney, coldness can cool the bones.)
[Prior Discussions] Wu Shou stated: For dysentery caused by heat toxicity resulting in purple or fresh red blood discharge, this herb is suitable. Kou Zhi stated: This herb remains still when there is wind but trembles when there is no wind, similar to Chi Jian (Gastrodia Rhizome).
[Contraindications] Miao Xiyong (author of *Jingshu*) stated: Contraindicated for patients with li xia (dysentery), stomach deficiency with loss of appetite, undigested food in stool, diarrhea due to deficiency-cold, and chills/fever not caused by damp-toxin.
[Notoginseng Root] (Sanqi)
Taste: Sweet, slightly bitter. Nature: Warm. Non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats hematemesis (vomiting blood), epistaxis (nosebleed), bloody dysentery, metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding); redness and swelling of the eyes; carbuncles and sores; metal weapon wounds, cudgel wounds, and traumatic injuries from falls. These can be chewed and applied externally, or powdered and sprinkled. Its hemostatic effect is significant.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Liver and Stomach meridians. It is a substance that disperses stasis and relieves pain. (It is a sacred medicine for treating metal weapon and cudgel wounds, acting on the blood level of these two meridians.)
[Prior Discussions] Li Shizhen stated: Taking one or two qian before receiving corporal punishment prevents blood qi from rushing to the heart; taking it after punishment and applying the powder externally removes stasis, reduces swelling, and facilitates healing. Regarding traumatic injuries... [Text fragmentary].
[Coptis Rhizome] (Huanglian)
Taste: Bitter. Nature: Cold. Non-toxic. It is generated by absorbing the clear and cold qi of heaven and earth. Its action can ascend and descend; it belongs to yang within yin.
[Indications] Primarily treats eye pain caused by heat, tearing; borborygmus, abdominal pain, and dysentery; swelling and pain in the female genitalia. (From *Shennong Bencao Jing*). Treats imbalance of cold and heat in the five zang organs, and chronic dysentery with pus and blood. Can be cooked with pig stomach [text fragmentary]. Detoxifies.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Heart meridian, and concurrently enters the Liver, Gallbladder, Spleen, Stomach, and Large Intestine meridians. It is a substance that clears fire and removes dampness.
[Prior Discussions] Zhang Yuansu (Haicang) stated: Huanglian is bitter and drying. Bitterness enters the Heart; fire tends toward dryness. To "drain the Heart" is actually to drain the Spleen. According to theory, "when excess, drain its child." Zhu Danxi stated: It should be stir-fried and taken slowly. The nature is mild... initial disease... [Text fragmentary].
[Processing] Li Shizhen stated: Huanglian enters the Heart meridian and is the primary drug for treating fire. To treat fire in the organ itself, use it raw; to treat excess fire in the Liver and Gallbladder, soak and stir-fry with pig bile... [Text fragmentary].
[Contraindications] Miao Xiyong (author of *Jingshu*) stated: Contraindicated for those with blood deficiency and qi deficiency leading to palpitations and irritability; children with diarrhea due to yang deficiency during smallpox; diarrhea after pustule formation; elderly people with spleen and stomach deficiency-cold...
