[Cao Wu Tou (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Rhizoma)]
Pungent in flavor, hot in nature, toxic. Acts as a guide herb with Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix). Incompatible with Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Bailian (Pseudostellariae Radix), and Baiji (Bletillae Rhizoma). Adverse to Lilu (Veratri Rhizoma). Contraindicated with Chi Zhi (Vicia Cracca Juice). Feared by Yitang (Maltose) and Heidou (Black Soybean). Cold water can detoxify Cao Wu Tou.
[Indications] Primarily treats Fengzhong Eefeng (Stroke accompanied by aversion to wind), shivering sweating. Dispels cold-damp Bi syndrome. Breaks up accumulations causing cold-heat patterns. (From *Shennong Bencao Jing*) Eliminates cold phlegm in the chest. Difficulty in swallowing food.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Spleen Meridian. It is a substance that searches for wind, overcomes dampness, removes phlegm, and attacks toxins.
[Preliminary Discussion] Wu Ji stated: The qi of Cao Wu Tou is sharp and keen, suitable for unblocking meridians and benefiting joints, finding paths to reach the disease site directly. Li Shizhen stated: Cao Wu Tou opens stubborn phlegm, drives away stubborn wind, treats stubborn sores, using toxicity to attack toxicity, greatly surpassing Chuan Wu. However, it is extremely toxic without restraint; if not indicated by the disease, do not use it.
[Bai Fu Zi (Typhonii Rhizoma)]
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature, toxic. Born from sensing Yang Qi. Ascending in action, belonging to Yang.
[Indications] Primarily treats Xintong Xuabi (Heart pain and blood bi), various diseases on the face, promoting the movement of medicinal potency. (From *Mingyi Bielu*) Treats stroke with loss of voice, all types of cold wind qi, facial scars and blemishes.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Stomach Meridian. It is a substance that dispels wind, dries dampness, and resolves phlegm. (Can guide medicinal potency upward)
[Preliminary Discussion] Li Shizhen stated: The rhizome resembles a smaller version of Cao Wu Tou, about one cun long, with wrinkles and nodes, used after processing. It is a medicine for the Yangming Meridian, due to its similarity to Fuzi.
[Contraindications] Miao Xiyong stated: For conditions resembling stroke, even if there is phlegm obstruction, it is contraindicated.
[Tian Nan Xing (Arisaematis Rhizoma)]
Bitter and pungent in flavor, warm in nature, toxic. Born from sensing Metal and Fire Qi. Can ascend and descend, belonging to Yang within Yin. Acts as a guide herb with Shuqi (Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba). Feared by Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). Dislikes Mangcao (Isatidis Radix/other sources depending on context, usually refers to specific toxic herbs).
[Indications] Primarily treats Fengzhong Mabi (Stroke numbness and paralysis), removes phlegm, directs Qi downward, benefits the chest and diaphragm, attacks hard accumulations, reduces carbuncles and swellings, disperses blood, induces abortion. (From *Kaibao Bencao*) Treats Jingfeng (Convulsions/Epilepsy).
[Niu Dan Xing (Calculus Bovis cum Arisaemate)] Has miraculous efficacy in treating Jingfeng, removes phlegm, kills parasites. (From Su Song)
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Lung Meridian. It is a substance that dispels wind-dampness and resolves stubborn phlegm. (Also has a dispersing function, acts on Liver and Spleen, more potent than Banxia)
[Preliminary Discussion] Shi Ying stated: For various wind syndromes with locked jaws, Nanxing is suitable, combined with Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) as main herbs. Li Shizhen stated: Pungent and numbing in taste, therefore...
[Contraindications] Miao Xiyong stated: Contraindicated in Yin deficiency with dry phlegm. Banxia mostly treats damp-phlegm, while Nanxing mostly treats wind-phlegm.
[Processing] *Bencao Beiyao* states: When used, soak in Alum solution or Gleditsia sinensis water for three days and nights, then sun-dry. Or soak in wine for one night, steam, cut open with a bamboo knife, until...
