Huo Xiang (Agastache):
Taste: Pungent. Nature: Slightly warm. Non-toxic. It is generated by inheriting the clear and fragrant Qi. Its ascending action exceeds its descending action; it belongs to Yang.
[Indications] Mainly treats wind-water toxic swelling, removes foul qi, stops cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea, and cardiac/abdominal colic. (From *Bielu*) Warms the middle jiao and promotes smooth qi flow. Suitable for lung deficiency with cold.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Lung and Spleen meridians, and also the Stomach meridian. It is a herb that clears the upper jiao and regulates the middle jiao. (It is an essential herb for treating stomach spleen vomiting and regurgitation.)
[Preliminary Discussion] Wang Haizang stated: "As a herb for the Hand and Foot Taiyin meridians, when added to Shunqi Wuyao San, it tonifies the Lung; when added to Huangqi Sizijunzi Tang, it tonifies the Spleen."
Chen Shigong (Zhongchun) stated: "It can guide clear Yang Qi upward to the vertex of the head."
[Contraindications] Miao Xiyong (Jingshu) stated: "Contraindicated in cases of Yin deficiency with fire hyperactivity, weak stomach with desire to vomit, stomach heat causing vomiting, extreme heat in the middle jiao due to fire excess, warm diseases, febrile diseases, and excess pathogenic factors in the stomach."
Lan Cao (Orchid Herb):
Also known as Shengtou Cao or Duliang Xiang. Taste: Pungent. Nature: Neutral. Non-toxic. It is generated by inheriting the clear and fragrant Qi of Heaven and Earth. Its action can ascend and descend; it belongs to Yin within Yang. Used with Fangji as an guiding herb.
[Indications] Primarily promotes water passages, kills gu poison, and wards off inauspicious qi. (From *Benjing*) Removes phlegm-pi in the chest. (From *Bielu*) Its fragrance generates fluids, quenches thirst, and moistens dryness.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Lung and Stomach meridians. It is a substance that eliminates phlegm and evil, disperses depression, and resolves knots. (Its function specializes in clearing the Lung and opening the Stomach.)
[Preliminary Discussion] Li Dongyuan (Yuansu) stated: "The Lung governs Qi. If Lung Qi is depressed, the upper orifices close and the lower orifices do not open. The Stomach receives water and grain. If Stomach Qi is stagnant, water metabolism fails leading to stasis. It can remove stale qi. Thus, Lan Cao not only wards off inauspicious qi but also treats diseases originating from the Stomach."
Jing Jie (Schizonepeta):
Taste: Pungent. Nature: Warm. Non-toxic. Generated by receiving the Qi of Spring. Its action is ascending; it belongs to Yang. Contraindicated with donkey meat and scaleless fish.
[Indications] Mainly treats chills and fever, rat sores, scrofula with ulcers, breaks up accumulated Qi, descends blood stasis, and removes damp-jaundice. (From *Benjing*) When used alone, it treats aversion to wind and thief wind.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Liver meridian, and also the Gallbladder and Stomach meridians. It is a substance for releasing the exterior, dispelling wind, and regulating blood. (It is also a mild agent, belonging to the Qi level of the Liver meridian.)
[Preliminary Discussion] Haizang stated: "It can search out Liver wind." Lizhen (Li Shizhen) stated: "Enters the Jueyin Qi level. It excels at dispelling wind pathogens, dissipating blood stasis, breaking up accumulated Qi, and eliminating toxin sores."
Qian Yi (Commentary by Ao): Jing Jie enters the Liver meridian and is fundamentally a formula for treating wind. However, it is mentioned to treat conditions such as removing stasis, hematemesis, epistaxis, bloody dysentery, metrorrhagia, women's blood wind, and postpartum blood vertigo, because these are affected by Wind-Wood pathogens. It should be combined with Fangfeng.
[Contraindications] Miao Xiyong (Jingshu) stated: "Contraindicated in cases of exterior deficiency with sweating, blood deficiency with chills and fever, Yin deficiency with fire flaming upward causing facial redness, and headache resulting from these conditions."
[Processing] Wang Ang (Beiyao) stated: "Use both stem and inflorescence, or use only the inflorescence. Since the inflorescence is at the apex, it is good at ascending and diffusing. For treating blood disorders, stir-fry until black before use."
