[Ju Danxi] In treating diseases related to pregnancy and childbirth, one should reason from the Jueyin Meridian (Jueyin Channel), without violating Stomach Qi (Stomach Energy) and the Upper Sanjiao (Triple Burner). This is called the "Three Prohibitions": do not induce sweating, do not purge downward, and do not promote urination. Inducing sweating leads to a condition similar to premature purgation in Cold Damage (Shanghan); promoting bowel movements causes rapid pulse and disturbs the Spleen; promoting urination leads to loss of body fluids internally and dryness in the Stomach. The principle of preparing medicines is: if these three prohibitions are not violated, Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) will harmonize naturally, and chills and fever will cease. If thirst occurs, use Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction); if Qi is weak, use Huangqi (Astragalus Root); if there is stabbing pain in the blood with a harmonious quality, add Danggui (Angelica Sinensis); if there is abdominal pain, add Shaoyao (Peony Root). Generally speaking, for postpartum conditions caused by epidemic pathogens, modify Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction); for miscellaneous diseases, modify Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction). One should carefully observe the pulse and symptoms before using them. In general, externally harmonize Ying and Wei, internally regulate bowel movements and urination, and treat it as a complicated syndrome resulting from mishandled Cold Damage.
[Li Zhongnan] For pre-partum diseases, one should only focus on calming the fetus and smoothing Qi. If external contraction of Wind, Cold, Summerheat, or Dampness, or internal injury from Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, Sorrow, Fear, or Fright leads to other diseases, the treatment methods are no different from those for men; one should seek remedies within the respective disease categories. However, when treating other conditions during pregnancy, one must carefully examine and verify any agents that might disturb the fetus.
[Ju Danxi] During pregnancy, one should clear heat and nourish blood. For calming the fetus before delivery, Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) and Huangqin (Scutellaria Baicalensis Root) are excellent herbs. One month before delivery, take Sanbu Wan (Three Tonics Pill) added with fried Xiangfu (Cyperus Rotundus Rhizome) and fried Shaoyao (Peony Root), formed into pills with steamed wheat cake dough. To suppress heat, use Sanbu Pill made into pills with Shengdihuang Paste (Powdered Huangqin, Huanglian, and Huangbai mixed with Shengdihuang Paste). At eight or nine months of pregnancy, one must smooth Qi using Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus) and Sujing (Perillae Caulis). When reaching eight or nine months, if fire agitates the fetus causing rebellious Qi and wheezing urgency, use Tiaohuangqin (Premium Scutellaria) and Xiangfu powdered and taken with water. Select Tiaohuangqin that sinks in water, indicating density. To secure the fetus: use Dihuang (Rehmannia Root) half qian, Danggui Shenwei (Angelica Sinensis Root tip and tail), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Shaoyao (Peony Root), and Chenpi (Citrus Reticulata Peel) each one qian, Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) one and a half qian, Gancao (Licorice Root) three fen, Huangqin (Scutellaria Baicalensis Root) and Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) half qian each, Huanglian (Coptis Chinensis Rhizome) and fried Huangbo (Phellodendron Amurense Bark) a small amount, Sangshangyangerteng (Honeysuckle Stem growing on Mulberry, i.e., Honeysuckle Flower) seven complete leaves, and fourteen glutinous rice grains; chop and decoct for administration. For blood deficiency causing insecurity, use Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin). For pain, use Suosha (Amomum Villosum Fruit) because it moves blood and Qi.
*Yijian Zhi* records: During the Zhenghe era, the granddaughter-in-law of Duke Cai Lu fell ill at term. Imperial physicians believed it was Yang-pattern Cold Damage and feared fetal expulsion, so they dared not administer cooling agents. Zhang Rui arrived, examined her, and said, "The fetus has been in the womb for ten months and is about to be born; what medicine could ruin it?" He immediately prescribed standard medication and instructed doubling the dose. Half a day later, the child was born, and the illness disappeared. The next day, the woman suffered severe diarrhea and throat closure preventing food intake. Other doctors criticized his error again, saying, "These two ailments are like ice and charcoal; furthermore, she has just given birth. Even a master of life would have no remedy." Zhang Rui said, "Do not worry; I will cure her today." He took dozens of pills and had her swallow them. Her throat opened immediately, and the diarrhea stopped. At the full month celebration, Duke Lu poured wine to toast him, saying, "Your skills are divine. I dare not ask how, but may I ask how one medicine cured two ailments?" Zhang Rui replied, "This is not recorded in the classics; I acted according to my judgment. The medicine used previously was Fuzi Lizhong Wan (Aconite and Poria Decocting Pill) wrapped in Zixue (Purple Snow). At that time, the throat was blocked; only extreme cold medicines could work. Once swallowed, Zixue dissipated completely; what reached the abdomen was the power of Fuzi (Aconite Lateral Root). Thus, one dose cured both ailments." The Duke was greatly amazed.
Wang Ji treated a woman who had experienced transverse and breech deliveries seven or eight times, with all children failing to survive. Wang Ji's pulse diagnosis revealed fine, choppy, and slightly wiry pulses. He said, "This is a dual deficiency of Qi and Blood accompanied by Heat." Someone asked, "If Qi and Blood are sufficient, pregnancy can form; if Qi and Blood are deficient, how can the fetus survive?" Wang Ji said, "Her long and thin physique with fine and soggy pulses indicates dual deficiency of Qi and Blood. Her bluish complexion and wiry pulse indicate frequent flaring of Liver Fire. The floating and slippery pulses at the Chi position suggest that Blood deficiency is lighter while Qi deficiency is heavier. It is appropriate to use Buyin Wan (Nourish Yin Pill), removing Chenpi (Citrus Reticulata Peel), and doubling the dosage of Xiangfu (Cyperus Rotundus Rhizome), Renshen (Ginseng Root), and Huangqi (Astragalus Root). Form into honeyed pills and take continuously. After a year, she delivered smoothly and bore a son.
Baosheng Wan (from *Ju Fang*) nourishes the fetus and benefits blood, calming and harmonizing the Zi Zang (Uterus). It treats improper management during pregnancy, or fetal movement and insecurity due to labor/overexertion, heavy pain in the lower back and abdomen, placental obstruction and leaking fetus, intermittent lochia, uterine pathology preventing conception, or failure to maintain pregnancy leading to atrophy, dryness, failure to grow, passing the due date without delivery, full term but lack of strength to move, potentially causing miscarriage. It also treats inappropriate timing during labor, premature excitement, lochia appearing before labor begins, dry placenta leading to difficult labor, transverse or breech presentation, extreme pain and confusion, prolonged labor without delivery, dead fetus in the uterus, cold abdomen, blue-black lips, and vomiting of cold foam. It treats postpartum evil blood rushing upward causing fainting and unconsciousness, panting and sweating, incomplete expulsion of stasis, umbilical and abdominal pain, alternating chills and fever. It treats damage from labor, lingering emaciation, sallow complexion, thin body, palpitations, night sweats, poor appetite, gradually developing into Chulao (Postpartum Consumption). Taken monthly, it strengthens Qi, nourishes the fetus, regulates labor, moistens the fetus for easy delivery. Taken postpartum, it nourishes blood and Qi, harmonizes Yin and Yang, tightens Cou Li (pores/skin texture), solidifies Zang-Fu organs, treats Wind-Deficiency, and removes chronic cold.

Grind into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of quail eggs. Take one pill on an empty stomach dissolved in warm wine, and another dose before afternoon meals. It generates new blood and eliminates evil blood. For flank and abdominal pain, stabbing around the navel, rebellious Qi striking the Heart, phlegm-toxin, and loss of appetite, dissolve with a little Ginger Juice and wine. For various dysenteries, red and white leukorrhea, Blood-Cold, metrorrhagia, and leaking fetus, chop fresh Ginger and Aiye (Mugwort Leaf), stir-fry until red, decoct in wine, strain, and take. For persistent diarrhea, dissolve in aged rice water. For stranguria and various Lin syndromes, decoct Tongcao (Tetrapanax Pith) and Dengxincao (Juncus Effusus Axis) and take. For blood syncope with unconsciousness, dissolve in Danggui Wine. For upper heat and lower cold, decoct Renshen Tea. For generalized edema and water retention, decoct Xiaodou (Red Bean) and take. For postpartum Double-Toxin Cold Damage and Wind-stroke with opisthotonos rigid as a board, decoct Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction), cover with clothes/blankets to induce sweating. For amenorrhea, or intermixed five colors flowing frequently and intermittently, loss of taste, emaciated skin, flushed face, cracked lips, alternating chills and fever, vexatious pain in limbs, burning sensation in Five Hearts, dark spots, widespread blood spots, moving red swelling, and weakness from Blood-Wind consumption, mix with young boy's urine and a little Ginger Juice. Using young boy's urine is best for regular use; if it causes nausea, mix with half wine. For pregnant women near term, taking one dose daily until delivery results in no pain perception. Taking five to ten doses increases appetite daily due to medicinal power; its merits cannot be fully described.
Longxu Tang Treats body pain before and after delivery. *Baoshi Lun* states: Body pain occurs when the body is deficient and receives Wind-Evil, lodging in the meridians. Evil Qi battles Righteous Qi, clashing between bone and flesh, causing body pain and immobility. Longxu Tang is the primary treatment. If pregnancy involves body pain, it is likely due to excessive labor. Otherwise, for Wind-Cold invading meridians, Yutong Wan (Pain Relief Pill) or Fangfeng Tang (Saposhnikovia Decoction) are primary treatments. For postpartum body pain and immobility due to labor, it is because after birth, the joints open, blood vessels flow freely, and weak Qi causes blood stagnation between bone and flesh. Thus, joint meridians become tense, the lower back cannot turn, hands and feet cannot move, body heat feels like swallowing charcoal, head feels like nails driving in.
