[Xue] The *Classic* states: "The Stomach is the sea of water and grain, and the great source of the six fu organs." The qi and blood of the human body, as well as the zang and fu organs, are all generated by Stomach Qi. Therefore, Li Dongyuan's treatment method focuses primarily on the Spleen and Stomach. This embodies the principle that "tonifying the Spleen is superior to tonifying the Kidney." In infants and children, although they consume milk and food, the qi derived from water and grain is not yet fully formed, making them even more reliant on Stomach Qi. If Stomach Qi becomes deficient, the other four zang organs (Heart, Liver, Lung, Kidney) will lose their nourishment. Thus, Zhu Danxi stated that infants and children often suffer from Liver and Spleen disorders. If the complexion is pale, the eyes lack luster, breath from the mouth feels cold, there is anorexia with vomiting of clear fluid, emaciation, and abdominal pain, this is a syndrome of Deficient-Cold of Stomach Qi. It should be treated with Wuwei Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Powder for Extraordinary Merit) or Liu Junzi Tang (Six-Gentleman Decoction). If the stool is unformed, indicating concurrent Spleen deficiency, add Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) to warm it. If there is abdominal fullness and difficulty in defecation, indicating failure of Spleen transportation, add Muxiang (Aucklandia Root) to promote qi movement. If there is a preference for cold drinks and constipation, indicating Excess-Heat in the Stomach, treat with Xiehuang San (Powder to Drain the Yellow) to cool it. If Mingmen Fire (Fire of the Gate of Life) is deficient and unable to warm Earth (Spleen), use Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) to tonify. For congenital insufficiency of Stomach Qi, this pill is also used. When the True Yang of the Lower Jiao is abundant, it generates Yuan Qi of the Spleen upwards, naturally enabling the warming and steaming digestion of water and grain.
Pingwei San (Flat Stomach Powder) treats disharmony of the Spleen and Stomach, anorexia, chest and abdominal distension and pain, bitter taste, shortness of breath, nausea, belching, acid regurgitation, sallow complexion, emaciation, lethargy, body aches, and syndromes such as cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea.
Houpo (Magnolia Bark, processed with ginger juice, 5 liang) Chenpi (Tangerine Peel) Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 1 liang each) Cangzhu (Atractylodes Rhizome, soaked in rice wash water, dried, 8 liang)
Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, decocted with ginger and jujube; alternatively, it can be taken as a paste mixed with boiling water. Regular consumption regulates qi, warms the stomach, resolves retained food, eliminates phlegm-fluids, and wards off pathogenic factors of the four seasons.
My commentary: For the aforementioned syndromes, if caused by retention of milk and food, characterized by belching with a putrid odor, acid regurgitation, vomiting, and nausea, this formula is suitable. If the food has digested but Spleen and Stomach weakness persists, leading to vomiting and nausea, Sizijunzi Tang (Four-Gentleman Decoction) is appropriate.
Tiaozhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill) treats Deficient-Cold of the Spleen and Stomach.
Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) Renshen (Ginseng Root) Gancao (Licorice Root, fried, 5 fen each)
Bawei Dihuang Wan (Eight-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) is Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) plus Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) and Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root), 1 liang each. It treats congenital deficiency of Mingmen Fire failing to warm Earth, resulting in Cold-Deficiency of Spleen Earth, reduced appetite, indigestion, umbilical pain, and frequent nocturia. As stated in the *Neijing*: "Tonify the source of fire to eliminate yin shadows," which precisely describes this medication.
Qian Shi Yihuang San (Master Qian's Powder to Benefit the Yellow/Spleen, also known as Bupi San) treats vomiting and diarrhea due to Cold-Deficiency of the Spleen and Stomach. (Formula seen previously)
My commentary: Use the previous formula for Spleen Earth Cold-Deficiency, or when Cold Water insults Earth, causing vomiting and diarrhea, cold extremities, surging phlegm-saliva, sleeping with eyes partially open (exposed pupils), and anorexia. For vomiting and diarrhea due to Spleen Earth weakness, use Liu Junzi Tang (Six-Gentleman Decoction) with Chaihu (Bupleurum Root). If ineffective or if all extremities are cold, indicating Deficient-Cold, add Muxiang (Aucklandia Root) and Paogjiang (Processed Dried Ginger). If caused by the nursing mother's Spleen deficiency leading to Liver overacting, treat with the aforementioned medicines. If the nursing mother's depression and anger cause these symptoms in the child, the mother should concurrently take Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction).
