Taiping Shenghui Fang records: If the five kinds of Gan syndrome (a group of pediatric disorders characterized by malnutrition and digestive dysfunction) persists for a long time without healing, parasites will accumulate in the abdomen. The body becomes emaciated with sallow complexion, and dysentery continues incessantly. It is appropriate to administer medicine to expel the parasites, so that the pathogenic Qi of Gan will gradually recede. These parasites resemble silk hairs or horse tails, mostly emerging from the abdomen, back, head, and neck. If the parasites are yellowish-white or reddish, they can be treated; if they are bluish-green, they are incurable.
Zhusha Wan (Cinnabar Pill), from *Luxin Jing*: Treats pediatric Gan dysentery. By distinguishing the color of the parasites, one can determine the prognosis (auspicious or inauspicious).
Ingredients: Zhusha (Cinnabaris, amount the size of half a lotus seed), Awèi (Ferulae Resina, amount the size of Cinnabar), Fubian Xue (Blood of Bat, three drops), Meisu (Brow Butter, a small amount).
Preparation and Administration: Finely mix the above ingredients, and blend with a small amount of Kouzhi (lip balm/oil). First, bathe the child in a decoction of peach and willow branches. Then, depending on the child's size, fill the umbilicus with a pill-sized amount (size of a mung bean) of the mixture. Cover the umbilicus with paper. Have the child wear green clothing to cover the body. Observe if parasites emerge; yellow indicates mild condition, while blue-black indicates severe condition.
