Cut the herbs into fine pieces. Add one cup of water, decoct until three-quarters remains, remove dregs, and take warm at any time.
[Spontaneous and Night Sweating] Spontaneous sweating or night sweating after smallpox are all due to weak Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), heat in Ying Blood (Nutritive Blood), and deficiency of muscles. It is suitable to take Baoyuan Tang (Great Method) and Danggui Liuhuang Tang (Angelica Six-Huang Decoction) alternately, and simultaneously administer Baipu San (Decayed Mugwort Powder). If sweating is profuse, apply Wenfen (Warm Powder) externally (formulas see under Spontaneous Sweating section). If the whole body is like flowing water, skin moist like oil, and sweat beads up like pearls, these are all signs of Yang Collapse (Wang Yang), which is fatal and incurable.
[Blood Loss] Blood loss after smallpox is caused by residual toxic pathogenic heat forcing blood to move recklessly. If bleeding from the nose, Xuanshen Dihuang Tang (Scrophulariae and Rehmanniae Decoction) is the main prescription (for Blood Loss); externally, use Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) stir-fried until charred black, ground into powder, and insufflated into the nose. If bleeding from urine, Bazheng San (Eight-Righteousness Powder) is the main prescription (for Dysuria). If bleeding from stool, Taoren Chengqi Tang (Peach Kernel and Da Huang Decoction) is the main prescription. This is the same as the above spontaneous sweating syndrome in that both involve Heat; the former has Heat in the Wei level, hence sweating; this one has Heat in the Ying level, hence bleeding. For both syndromes if accompanied by constipation, Sishun Qingliang San (Four-Obedient Cooling-Laxative Powder) is the main prescription (see Fever).
Taoren Chengqi Tang (Peach Kernel and Da Huang Decoction)

Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, half qian)
Cut the aforementioned four ingredients into fine pieces. Add one cup of water, decoct until three-quarters remains, remove dregs, add the Taoren paste, dissolve, and take before meals.
[Vomiting and Diarrhea with Ascaris] After smallpox, vomiting ascaris or passing ascaris in stool indicates that Heat-Toxin has entered the interior. Heat in the Stomach causes vomiting of ascaris; Heat in the Intestines causes diarrhea of ascaris. For diarrhea, Huangqin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction for Diarrhea) plus Taoren and Aiye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) is used; for vomiting, Huangqin Banxia Tang (Scutellaria and Pinellia Decoction for Vomiting and Diarrhea) plus Wumei (Mume Fructus) and Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper) is used. If there is no vomiting or diarrhea, but only vomiting of ascaris upon smelling food, this is due to long-term Stomach deficiency where parasites have no food; thus they vomit upon smelling food odor, and hunger arises easily after eating. Lizhong Tang Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill) plus Wumei meat, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Chuanjiao is indicated.
Yuan Shi's song for treating smallpox intestinal worms: "Smallpox worms indicate separation of Stomach Qi, Ginseng, Atractylodes, and Tangerine Peel; Poria, Licorice, and Angelica combined, decoct and take continuously until worms are removed."
Lianrou Tang (Lotus Seed Decoction)
Lianrou (Nelumbinis Plumula, heart removed, half jin)
Zhurou (Porcine Meat, fat and skin removed, one jin)
Boil together in water until cooked, add Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) Fu Jiang (Fermented Bean Curd), and feed morning and evening. This nourishes the Stomach Qi, and the worms will naturally remain settled. Do not use Shijunzi (Quisqualis Fructus) or Binglang (Arecae Semen); administering these during smallpox will cause death.
[Hu Huo Syndrome] After smallpox, vomiting ascaris with cold extremities is called Hui Jue (Ascaric Convulsion). If there is no vomiting or diarrhea but internal erosion of Zang-Fu organs, it is called Hu Huo (Fox-Spirit Syndrome). In Hu Huo syndrome, the patient sleeps often, silently desires no food, has sores on the upper lip (worms erode the anus), sores on the lower lip (worms erode the viscera), voice is hoarse, and symptoms shift up and down, hence the name Hu Huo. This condition is most severe, especially common after measles. Huachong Wan (Expel Worms Pill) is the main prescription. If stool is dry, Taoren Chengqi Tang plus Huaizi (Sophorae Tonkinensis Fructus) is used to purge.

Grind into fine powder. Wash Wumei, remove pits, pound into paste, and mix with pills. Take with Rice Drink.
[Ya Gan - Gangrenous Gingivitis] After smallpox, ulceration and rotting of teeth and gums occur because after the scabs fall off, saliva immersion causes Gan erosion sores. Apply Mianjian San (Silkworm Cocoon Powder) (see Scabbing section). If breath is foul and bleeding occurs, it is also called Zouma Gan Chuang (Running Horse Gan Sore). Internally, use Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Detoxification Decoction for Irritability) plus Xionghuang (Realgar) made into pills, taken with Zhuye Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction); externally apply Mameng San (Horse Cry Powder). If sores appear in mouth and tongue, Xixin San (Wash Heart Powder) is suitable. For all the above syndromes if constipated, use Sishun Yin (Four-Obedient Decoction) to purge; if stool is normal/moist, use Ganlu Yin (Sweet Dew Decoction). Wash with decoction of old tea leaves and Xie Ye Gen (Allii Macrostemonis Radix). Burn Bai Mei (White Plum) to ash, calcine Renzhongbai (Urine Sediment), add Xionghuang powder, and apply.

Generally, after sores and smallpox, if there are syndromes such as constipation and internal heat, one must resolve and purge them, preventing residual toxins from generating various syndromes. Formulas for resolution and purging include Sanhuang Wan (Three-Yellow Pill) and Sishun Yin (Four-Obedient Decoction) (see Fever). If resolution and purging are neglected, leading to various syndromes, one must urgently treat with medicines that hit the root cause, not slowly, lest the disease spread and harm the person. Nowadays, people cannot investigate the cause of illness and generally use non-urgent medicines, merely intending to avoid error, never truly investigating the cause of illness to medicate accordingly. In urgent treatment, the key is to distinguish deficiency and excess. If constitution is solid, Ying and Wei are robust, and heat exists post-illness, immediate resolution and purging should be given; slow treatment is not appropriate. If constitution is weak, Ying and Wei are greatly deficient post-illness, with trembling when sitting/standing and poor appetite, gentle and mild medicines should be used to support. Wait until appetite returns and Ying/Wei are replenished, then slightly resolve and purge; it is not too late. Or, for extremely deficient persons, resolution and purging may be omitted.
