The monk Song Cheng from Nantai Temple in Wuwei transmitted to Wen Fa from Xichuan a "forbidden method" (incantation therapy) for treating *Huoyan Dan* (Flame Erysipelas, an acute skin infection resembling fire). The procedure involves using five pine torches (made of pine resin), each as thick as a chopstick. Ignite one end of a torch. Hold it in the right hand, pinching the middle crease of the second phalanx of the middle finger with the thumb; perform the same action with the left hand. Stand facing north, calmly visualizing the water of Ren and Gui (the heavenly stems associated with the North and the Water element in Five-Phase theory), vast and boundless. Inhale it deeply with one breath, then blow onto the flame. Visualize again and blow again, repeating this three times. Test the flame by bringing it near your own mouth; if it does not burn, use the pine torch to circle around the infant's lesion once and draw a cross over the lesion to complete the treatment. If the flame burns and causes pain during testing, one must re-visualize inhaling water. This practice should be performed on the first day of the New Year and on the Dragon Boat Festival.
[Xue Ji notes:] Among all sores and ulcers, *Ding* toxin (carbuncle/furuncle with deep-rooted toxicity) is the most severe and fatal speedily. Ancient texts state: "There are twelve types of Ding," each differing in nature. If thirty-six Ding lesions appear internally, reaching this number renders the condition incurable; however, death may also occur before reaching this count due to the dispersion of toxic vapors. Cases where pox toxins infect individuals, manifesting on the head, face, or entire body, do not belong to this category. In infants, this disease often arises from the wet nurse consuming toxic substances, sudden ingestion of dietary toxins by the child, or exposure to abnormal Qi of the four seasons. The sores typically appear on the head, face, and limbs, varying in shape and color: some resemble small pustules, others blisters; symptoms include pain, itching, or numbness/anesthesia. External signs present with chills and fever, vomiting, nausea, and limb stiffness/spasms. Generally, one must differentiate whether the pathogenic factor is in the Exterior or Interior. Urgently apply Garlic-Separated Moxibustion (Ge Suan Jiu) combined with detoxifying formulas. If the patient loses consciousness or exhibits trismus (lockjaw), urgently administer powdered *Duoming Dan* (Life-Restoring Pill) mixed with warm wine and force-fed. If the patient has consumed raw/cold foods or been washed with cold water, mild cases will be difficult to cure, and severe cases will be untreatable. *Ding* sores on both feet often show red streaks extending to the umbilicus; those on both hands show red streaks extending toward the heart region; those inside the lips/mouth show red streaks extending into the throat. Urgently puncture with a needle to drain evil blood and vent the toxin, ensuring safety. For lesions in remote areas where medicinal delivery is difficult, only moxibustion possesses the power to restore life; administering harsh, acrid medicines would endanger the patient. Infants have tender and fragile muscles and cannot articulate pain. When applying moxibustion, slice garlic thinly, slightly hollow out the side touching the skin, place mugwort on the garlic, and test the heat/coolness on an adult's arm until comfortable. Then move it to the sore. Prepare another mugwort cone, test it similarly, and alternate them without interruption.
Feilong Duoming Dan: Treats carbuncles, back abscesses (*Fabei*), brain carbuncles (*Naoju*), etc.
Ingredients: True Toad Venom (*Chansu*, dried, dissolved in wine), Calomel (*Qingfen*), Calcined White Alum (*Ku Baifan*), Arsenolite (*Hanshuishi*), Verdigris (*Tonglv*), Frankincense (*Ruxiang*), Myrrh (*Moyao*), Musk (*Shexiang*), Cinnabar (*Zhusha*) (each 6 qian), Snails (40, ground separately; optional if unavailable).
Preparation: Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Mix with Toad Venom and snail paste, adding a little wine if necessary, to form pills the size of mung beans. Take 1–2 pills per dose, swallowed with warm wine or scallion decoction. For severe cases, apply Garlic-Separated Moxibustion externally.
