Tian stated: When an infant is born with generalized skin redness resembling the application of cinnabar, first administer Niuhuang San (Cow Bezoar Powder) internally to support the interior and expel toxins, followed by external application of Lanye San (Isatis Leaf Powder). The nursing mother should take Qingliang Yinzi (Cooling Decoction) for three doses. (Note: Niuhuang San may refer to Niuhuang Duoming San [Cow Bezoar Life-Snatching Powder], see the "Wheezing" section; Qingliang Yin is found in the "Abdominal Pain" section.)
Zhang Huan stated: Upon birth, an infant's eyes must be washed clean. If not cleaned thoroughly, impure fluids will soak and erode the eyes, causing the eyelids to become red and ulcerated, potentially persisting into adulthood without healing. This condition is named Tai Chi (Fetal Redness/Newborn Ophthalmia), and Erjin San (Two Golds Powder) is appropriate.
Zeng noted: A child of pure yang nature, within a month of birth, may suddenly present with both eyes red, angular canthi ulcerated, dry, itchy, and developing nebulae. This results from wind-heat pathogens contracted by the mother during pregnancy, transmitting to the Heart and Liver meridians. Initially, Baijie San (Hundred Resolutions Powder) combined with Danggui San (Angelica Sinensis Powder), along with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Dengxincao (Juncus Effusus), should be decocted and administered. Subsequently, Daochi San (Guide Out Redness Powder) and Niubang Tang (Arctium Decoction) added with Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Muzei (Equisetum Hiemale), and Chanqiao (Cicada Slough) should be decocted with water and taken, yielding effective results.
In cases of difficult labor where fetal qi stagnates and movement is slow, pressure on the infant's head causes blood extravasation and seepage downward. If severe, blood floods the eyes, obscuring the pupil; if mild, it presents as swelling and redness of the outer eyelids with upper and lower angular ulceration. In such instances, administering cold-natured medicines would damage the zang-fu organs' yang qi; instead, Shengdi Huang Tang (Rehmannia Root Decoction) should be prescribed.

Erjin San Formula:
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, remove stamens) Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, each 1 qian)
Pulverize these into coarse powder. Soak in breast milk overnight, then bake dry. For each use, take a small amount, wrap in new cotton, soak in Jingjie Tang (Schizonepeta Decoction), warm slightly, and wash frequently.
Zhenjin San: Treats newborns whose eyes were not washed clean at birth, leading to impure fluid erosion causing eyelid redness and ulceration that persists into adulthood. This is caused by the mother consuming hot-natured foods or medicines and is named Tai Chi.
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, remove stamens) Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) Chishao (Paeoniae Rubra Radix) (each 1 qian) Xingren (Pruni Semen, remove skin and tips, 0.5 qian)
Chop into pieces, soak in breast milk overnight, sun-dry, and grind into an extremely fine powder. Mix with Sheng Dihuang Zhi (Juice of Rehmanniae Radix Fresh) equivalent to one character dose, instill frequently into the eyes. Alternatively, wrap herbs in new cotton, soak in warm Jingjie Tang, and wash frequently. The mother should take Xixin San.
Xixin San:
Gancao (Licorice Root, raw) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) Jingjiesui (Schizonepetae Spica) Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, baked) (each 0.5 qian)
Grind into an extremely fine powder. Take with decoction of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) after meals.
