The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: For infants, male babies should wear clothes padded with the father's old cotton wadding, and female babies should wear the mother's old clothes. Do not use new cotton; it must absolutely not be too thick, lest it cause high fever, sores, or epilepsy in the child, all of which may originate from this. Chao Yuanfang stated: When an infant is first born, the skin and muscles are not yet fully formed. One should not dress them warmly, as this will lead to laxity and weakness of the tendons and bones. It is advisable to expose them frequently to wind and sunlight. If they never see wind or sun, their skin and flesh will become fragile and soft, making them susceptible to injury. If infants are always kept within curtains, wrapped in heavy layers for warmth, it is like plants growing in the shade without wind or sun—becoming soft and brittle, unable to withstand wind and cold. Infants should all wear clothes padded with old wadding, not new cotton. When the weather is mild and windless, let the mother hold the child and play in the sunlight. Frequent exposure to wind and sun will make the blood refined and the Qi firm, the muscles solid and dense, enabling tolerance of wind and cold and preventing disease. Infants should also practice wearing thin clothing, starting from autumn. One should not suddenly reduce their clothing in spring and summer, as this will cause them to contract wind-cold. In winter, infants should only wear quilted jackets or stitched garments. Only in extreme cold should old cotton be gradually added. Families often love their children dearly but harm them by using overly thick cotton padding. Care should be taken to regulate the infant so that they do not sweat; sweating leads to deficiency and damage, making one susceptible to wind-cold. This must be guarded against both day and night, whether awake or asleep. After the first month, newborns must be placed in swaddling cloths. The method of swaddling must be appropriate. In spring and summer, when all things are growing, it is suitable to teach the infant to lie on the ground, so as not to go against the Qi of growth. In autumn and winter, when all things are storing, it is suitable to keep them in warm places, so as not to go against the Qi of storage. Then the blood will be refined and the Qi harmonious, and diseases will have no entry. Zhu Danxi said: Before the age of sixteen, a person's Blood and Qi are abundant, like the sun just rising or the moon about to be full. However, Yin is constantly insufficient. The way to nurture them must be cautious. Boys should not wear fur or silk garments. This is a well-known maxim of ancient sages. Chang (lower garment) refers to clothing for the lower body; silk is much warmer than cloth, and fur is warmer and softer than silk. Generally, the lower body governs Yin. Exposure to coolness allows Yin to grow easily, while warmth causes Yin to diminish secretly. Therefore, avoiding thick, warm clothing made of cotton or silk for the lower body, lest it hinder Yin Qi, is indeed a sound argument.
