[Wugan Baotong Wan] Treats infants and children who do not distinguish between hot and cold in their diet, have a preference for greasy foods, indulge in sweet and salty tastes, leading to dysfunction of the Zang-Fu organs and the generation of Gan syndrome (malnutrition due to digestive disorder).
Herbs: Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), Kuanlian Genpi (Cinchona Bark or related root bark), Yeming Sha (Feces Vespertilionis), Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis), Lvhui (Aloe), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Longdancao (Radix Gentianae), Bai Wuyi (Fructus Tsoongopodii), Ganchan (Dry Toad Skin) (each 1 fen); Shexiang (Musk) (a small amount); Chantui (Periostracum Cicadae) (remove mouthparts and claws, 1 fen); Zhudan (Porcine Bile) (five large ones, mixed with the above herbs, baked dry).
The above ingredients are processed into pills using millet paste as a binder, sized like hemp seeds. One-year-old infants take three pills at any time, administered with rice water, three times a day. Avoid pork.
[Da Luhui Wan] Treats Gan syndrome by killing parasites, harmonizing the Stomach, and stopping diarrhea.
Herbs: Huhuanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis or similar bitter herb, likely Picrorhizae Rhizoma), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Bai Wuyi (Fructus Tsoongopodii) (remove impurities), Lvhui (Aloe), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae), Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Bai Leiwuan (Semen Arisaematis) (split open, remove red parts, do not use), Qieshi (Semen Carpesii) (lightly stir-fried, each half liang); Shexiang (Musk) (2 qian, separately ground).
The above ingredients are ground into powder, formed into pills using millet rice, sized like mung beans. Take 10-20 pills per dose, administered with rice water.
My commentary: The preceding formula (Wugan Baotong Wan) is effective for Liver-Spleen Gan accumulation, food stagnation with fever, cloudiness over the eyes, or neck lymph node swelling due to Gan heat, ear sores, emaciation, fever with thirst, poor appetite, abdominal distension, gum erosion, cheek rot, sores on the scrotum and penis, or pain in the chest, hypochondrium, and lower abdomen. Substituting Qingpi with Longdancao and omitting Shexiang yields even better results.
[Luhui Wan] (From *Zeng Shi*) Mainly treats Wugan (Five Types of Gan), Balixie (Eight Dysenteries), roundworms, weakness of the Zang-Fu organs, emaciation, brittle and sparse hair, abdominal distension with visible veins, turbid white urine, excessive thirst, frequent watery diarrhea, indigestion of grains, body-wide sores and scabies, and dry complexion. This medicine greatly nourishes the Stomach Qi, strengthens vital energy, stops dysentery, expels parasites, and promotes muscle growth.
Herbs: Nanmuxiang (Lithospermi Radix et Rhizoma), Dingxiang (Flos Caryophylli) (each 2.5 qian); Hezi (Fructus Chebulae) (remove pit and flesh residue); Roudoukou (Nucis Arecae Catalpae Semen); Shijunzirou (Semen Quisqualis); Lvhui (Aloe) (each 4 qian); Zaourou (Pulp Jujubae) (1 liang, thinly sliced, dried slowly in a clay vessel).
Except for the Shijunzirou which must be thinly sliced and pounded extremely fine in a mortar, the other four herbs (Nanmuxiang, etc.) are wrapped in wet flour and roasted until fragrant, then cooled on the ground, the flour removed, chopped, and dried. They are then ground into fine powder together with the Zao Rou and Lvhui, and again pounded evenly with the Shijunzirou in a mortar. Honey pills are made, sized like hemp seeds. Take 30-55 pills per dose, administered with warm rice soup. Must be taken on an empty stomach. For smaller children, dissolve the pills in rice soup before administration.
[Wanying Wan] Treats various Gan syndromes characterized by heat in the Stomach aperture, loss of appetite, hair tufting, and sallow complexion.
Herbs: Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis) (remove insect debris), Huhuanglian (Picrorhizae Rhizoma), Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) (remove albedo), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) (remove albedo), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), Maiya (Fructus Hordei Germinatus) (cleaned and dried), Sanleng (Rhizoma Sparganii), Ezhu (Rhizoma Curcumae), Wuyi (Fructus Tsoongopodii), Binglang (Semen Arecae), Longdancao (Radix Gentianae), Chuanlianzi Rou (Semen Toosendan), Shijunzi (Semen Quisqualis) (each 1 liang).
Except for Binglang (not overheated) and Maiya, the remaining twelve herbs are chopped, stir-fried until slightly charred, cooled, and then ground into fine powder together with the Binglang and Maiya. Pills are made using wheat starch paste, sized like hemp seeds. Take 30-50 or 70 pills per dose, administered with warm clear rice soup at any time, or on an empty stomach. For smaller children, make pills sized like millet grains, with the same dosage method.
*Bo Ji Fang*'s Zhisheng Qingjin Dan: Treats fifteen types of wind diseases in children, five types of Gan qi, febrile sensations during Bianzheng (physiological fever in infants), stool resembling date-paste feces, thin legs with abdominal distension, visible abdominal veins, sparse hair, pica (eating dirt), eyebrow loss, nail-biting, emaciated limbs, Gan roundworms biting the heart, frequent dysentery, susceptibility to fright with cough, Gan erosion causing red/white sores in mouth/nose, and Gan eye (night blindness). All these conditions can be treated.
Herbs: Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) (high quality, fine, 2 fen, ground; *Liang Fang* uses 3 fen); Xionghuang (Realgar) (2 fen, finely ground; *Liang Fang* uses 2 liang); Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum) (a small amount, ground; *Ju Fang* uses 1 zi); Zhusha (Cinnabaris) (1 fen, ground; *Liang Fang* uses 1 qian); Nifen (Calomel) (1 fen; *Liang Fang* uses 1 qian); Huhuanglian (Picrorhizae Rhizoma) (2 fen; *Liang Fang* uses 2 liang); Xiongdan (Ursi Bile) (1 fen, dissolved in warm water into the medicine; *Liang Fang* uses 1 qian); Baifuzi (Rhizoma Typhonii) (2 pieces; *Liang Fang* uses 1 qian; *Ju Fang* uses 2 qian); Lvhui (Aloe) (1 fen, ground; *Liang Fang* uses 1 qian); Shexiang (Musk) (0.5 fen, ground); Chansu (Toad Venom) (size of a soap bean; *Ju Fang* uses 1 zi); Qianshuang (Plumbum Subacetatum) (a small amount; *Liang Fang* same; *Ju Fang* uses 1 zi); Shuiyin (Hydrargyrum) (size of a soap bean; *Ju Fang* uses 1 qian, ground with Nifen until no shiny spots remain).
The thirteen ingredients are finely ground and sifted into powder, then thoroughly mixed in a mortar. Juice from one porcine bile is boiled, used to soak a small amount of steamed cake dough, and formed into pills sized like yellow millet. Dried and stored in sealed ceramic jars for later use. Take two pills per dose, administered according to the following decoctions based on the condition. For infantile convulsions with upward gaze and limb spasms, dissolve one pill in warm water, drip into the nose to induce sneezing 3-5 times; the eyes will return to normal and spasms will cease, followed by administering two pills with Mint Decoction. For chronic Wugan with thin limbs, distended abdomen, pica, nail-biting, sparse hair, and visible abdominal veins, administer two pills with porridge water. For Bianzheng fever/chills, administer two pills with Mint Decoction, dissolved. For chronic diarrhea/dysentery, administer two pills with rice water. For Gan roundworms biting the heart, administer two pills with Fructus Toosendan decoction. For nasal erosion, dental Gan worms, and mouth ulcers, grind two pills with infant's milk and apply to the affected area. For Gan eye/night blindness, cut open one white lamb liver with a bamboo knife, insert two pills inside, tie with hemp thread, boil in rice-washing water until cooked, and eat on an empty stomach. The nursing mother must avoid toxic fish, garlic, chicken, duck, and pork. Regular consumption every few days prevents all diseases and premature death; it is effective for any ailment.
