Chao Yuanfang stated that the meridians of Hand-Yangming and Foot-Taiyang both ascend to connect with the teeth. When wind pathogen invades these meridians and contends with blood and qi, it causes tooth swelling and pain, with pus discharge; this is termed "Wind Dental Caries" (Feng Qu).
*Qianjin Yifang* (Supplement to the Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) formula for treating dental caries:
Take white horse's suspended hoof (Ma Xuan Ti), cut it up, and insert it into the cavity of the decayed tooth. This need not be done more than three times to see results. (*Taiping Shenghui Fang* uses Ye Yan Cao).
*Shenghui Fang*'s Toad Powder (Xia Ma San): Used for pediatric Wind Dental Caries accompanied by slight cheek swelling.
Ingredients include: Dried Toad (Gan Xia Ma, one unit), Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis, finely ground), Tangerine Peel (Gan Zi Pi), Xi Xin (Asarum), White Chicken Droppings (Bai Ji Fen), Xun Huang (Realgar, prepared), She Xiang (Musk, finely ground), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger, processed until cracked and sliced, half a unit each for Musk and Ginger).
Pulverize the above ingredients, sift them through a fine sieve to make a powder, and grind them thoroughly to ensure uniformity. Wrap a small amount in thin cotton and insert it into the cavity of the decayed tooth. Replace once daily.
Another formula:
Fu Zi Bai (White Aconite Root), Ben Cao (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome or related species), Xi Xin (Asarum), Xiong Qiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Mang Cao (Polygonum Arystotoloides). (Each one liang).
Pulverize the above ingredients and sift them through a fine sieve to make a powder. Wrap a small amount in thin cotton and apply it to the affected tooth.
Formula for treating pediatric carious tooth pain due to wind, and pain caused by worm erosion:
Dried Toad (Gan Xia Ma, one unit, burned to ash), Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis, one unit), Lu Hui (Aloe, half a unit).
Grind the above ingredients together until fine. Use fresh Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di Huang) boiled into a paste. Apply to the teeth.
Formula for treating pediatric Wind Dental Caries toothache and black rot caused by worm erosion:
Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis, finely ground), Ash from White Chicken Droppings (Ji Fen Bai, burned to ash), Ben Cao (Ligusticum), Xi Xin (Asarum), Xiong Huang (Realgar, finely ground, each one unit), She Xiang (Musk, a small amount, finely ground).
Pulverize the above ingredients, sift them finely, and grind them together until uniform. Take a small amount as needed and apply to the teeth.
Another formula: Take five liang of the white bark of Prunus Mahaleb root (Yu Li Gen Bai Pi), slice it, and decoct it in one and a half large cups of water until one large cup remains. Hold the warm liquid in the mouth and spit it out when cool. This should expel worms.
Another formula: Roast Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit (Zao Jiao), remove skin and seeds, and pound into powder. Apply a small amount to the painful tooth to cure the condition.
Another formula: Shape Pinus or Sabina resin (Song Bai Zhi) into a sharp cone shape and insert it into the carious cavity. After a short while, the carious worm will emerge along with the resin, curing the disease.
Another formula: Take Ban Xiang (Clove/Spikenard, specifically Elettaria Cardamomum or Syzygium aromaticum bud historically referred to as Ji She Xiang) half a liang, decoct it in one medium cup of water until reduced to six parts. Remove the dregs, hold the warm liquid in the mouth, and spit it out when cool.
