Zhong'e (Sudden Collapse due to Evil Qi) is a syndrome caused by exposure to abnormal qi, characterized suddenly by cold extremities, skin with gooseflesh, cyanosis and blackening of the head and face, and loss of mental possession.
It may present as incoherent speech, locked jaw and clenched teeth, dizziness and fainting, or coma with unconsciousness. This constitutes sudden jue (sudden collapse), ke wu (alien invasion), fei shi (flying corpse), gui ji (ghost strike), etc., often occurring when mourning, visiting funerals, entering temples, or climbing tombs. Administer Suhe Xiang Wan (Styrax Pill). After slight recovery, administer Tiaoqi San (Regulate Qi Powder) and Pingwei San (Calm the Stomach Powder) together, named Tiaoqi Pingwei San.
Treatment for the Five Extinctions (Wu Jue): one is hanging, two is crushing injury, three is drowning, four is nightmare death (yan mei), five is difficult childbirth. Use Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 1 liang, powdered, formed into pills the size of beans, inserted into the nostrils for cure. If the heart region remains warm, it can be treated within one day.
[Hanging Death] Zhang Zhongjing stated: Even if cold from morning to evening, it must be treatable; from evening to morning, it is difficult to treat, because yin qi is abundant at that time. However, in summer, nights are shorter than days and it is hot, so it should still be treatable. He also said: If the epigastrium is slightly warm, even after more than a day, it can still be treated. The patient should be slowly untied and released; do not cut the rope. Place the patient flat on bedding; one person stands on both shoulders, pulls the hair to keep it taut and not loose; one person presses on the chest and rubs frequently; one person massages and extends the arms and legs; if stiff, gradually force flexion and press the abdomen. After about the time it takes to cook a meal, although breath returns from the mouth and eyes open, continue pressing without stopping, do not exhaust the patient. After a moment, give small amounts of Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) and rice gruel to moisten the throat until swallowing is possible. Have two people blow air into both ears using tubes. This method is best and rarely fails. Do not cut the rope; use knees or cloth-wrapped hands to firmly press the anus, lift and untie, rub neck marks, stimulate nostrils and blow ears. Wait for breath to return before releasing. If gas escapes immediately, it is incurable. *Zhou Hou Fang* states: Calm the mind, slowly release, do not cut rope, hold the body. If heart is warm, prick chicken comb blood into mouth to revive. For males use hen's blood, for females use rooster's blood. Another method: Ji Shi Bai (White Excrement of Gallus gallus domesticus) the size of a date, mixed with half a cup of wine, administered orally or nasally is excellent. *Qian Jin Fang* uses Lan Zhi (Indigo Juice), other methods same as above. For hanging, if body warmth has not lasted long, lower slowly, round the trachea, pull hair up and rub, perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, blow into rectum with bellows, stimulate nostrils with Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and Zaoguo (Gleditsiae Fructus), administer Suhe Xiang Wan (Styrax Pill) mixed with Shengjiang Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens Juice), or decoct Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) mixture. Recovery indicates treatability; deep ligature marks beyond time limit indicate untreatability.
[Crushing Injury] Sudden fall causing death by pressure; if heart region is warm, all can be saved. Position the patient like a monk sitting in meditation, have one person lower the head by holding hair, blow Banxia powder (Pinelliae Rhizoma) into nostrils. If revived, administer a mixture of Shengjiang Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens Juice) and Xiangyou (Sesame Oil). See fracture section for details.
[Drowning Death] Retrieve, place corpse prone on a cow's back; if no cow, use a stool to drain water. In winter, wrap with cotton quilt. Administer Zaoguo juice (Gleditsiae Fructus) mixed with fresh Shengjiang juice (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens Juice). Rub whole body with fried ginger slices. Recovery indicates treatability. Bleeding from seven orifices indicates untreatability. *Jin Gui Yao Lue* rescue formula: bury in two dan of ash from stove, from head to foot, water flows out from seven orifices then alive. Place drowned person supine on large stool, elevate feet on two bricks, rub umbilicus with salt, wait for water to flow out naturally. Do not lift upside down. If heart region is slightly warm, rescue is possible. Another method: Drowned for one night still recoverable; crush Zaoguo (Gleditsiae Fructus), wrap in cotton, insert into lower orifice, water flows out shortly after and patient revives.
[Nightmare Death] Shen deficiency and turbid qi, wind-phlegm lodging in Heart and Lung, leading to dream state without waking, death by turbid qi blockage. If qi moves but does not revive, with cyanotic-black face, it is untreatable. Urgently use Chubi San (Nasal Snuff Powder) to draw out phlegm from diaphragm, then administer Suhe Xiang Wan (Styrax Pill) to guide clear qi. Body movement indicates revival; body stillness with sunken complexion indicates untreatability. Do not call loudly near the patient. Bite heel hard and spit on face. If not waking, move position slightly, call slowly. Keep existing light, do not ignite new lights. *Zhou Hou Fang*: Sudden unresponsiveness, do not shine fire as it kills. Bite thumb joint hard, spit on face to revive. Crush Jiu Cai (Allii Tuberosi Herba) juice into nostrils; in winter use Jiu Gen (Allii Tuberosi Radix) juice orally. Zaoguo powder (Gleditsiae Fructus) the size of mung bean blown into nostrils causes sneezing and qi passage. Xionghuang (Realgar) finely sifted powder blown into nostrils via tube.
