The *Suwen* (Basic Questions) states: When the liver, kidney, and lung are full and solid, swelling occurs. (Wang Bing’s commentary notes: "Full" refers to pulse qi being full and solid; "swelling" refers to carbuncles and sores.) Lung abscess presents with wheezing and distension in both hypochondriac regions. (Zhang Zhongjing stated: In lung abscess, purulent sputum is expectorated like millet porridge, accompanied by dry throat and chills.) Liver abscess manifests as distension in both hypochondriac regions, fright during sleep, and inability to urinate. Kidney abscess presents with distension from the feet up to the lower abdomen. (Lin Yi’s annotation on the *Daqi Lun* states that "feet below" should be read as "below the thighs." The *Qianjin Fang* states: For intestinal abscess, the lower abdomen becomes swollen and hard; pressing causes pain and frequent urination resembling strangury. Zhang Zhongjing stated: Intestinal abscess involves a hard and firm lower abdomen. Generally, lower abdominal pain with hardness indicates kidney abscess, while frequent urination resembling strangury indicates intestinal abscess; these belong to the category of lung and liver abscesses.) Stomach abscess is characterized by a rebellious and vigorous Renying pulse. (The full text is detailed later under the entry for Stomach Abscess.)

Huaizhong Dan (Loyalty Pill) is used to treat internal abscesses complicated by necrotic pus and blood, which are extremely foul-smelling, causing cold pain around the umbilicus and abdomen. This formula promotes the expulsion of pus and blood.
Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi, 白芷) one liang, Root of Malva single-leaf red flower (Shuhuihua Gen, 蜀葵花根) one liang, Alum calcined (Bai Fan Ku, 白矾枯), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao Yao, 白芍药) five qian.
Grind the above ingredients into powder, mix with melted beeswax to form pills the size of Chinese quinine seeds. Take thirty pills on an empty stomach with rice broth to expel pus and blood. After the pus and blood are completely expelled, administer Shixuan San (Ten-Accumulation Powder) to tonify. Avoid stimulant foods. (Another prescription: Cook crucian carp in lard and eat it to treat intestinal abscess. Another prescription: Calcinate Turtle Plastron until carbonized, grind into powder, and take orally.)
