The *Gui Yi Ji* states: Carbuncles occurring at the two locations of the left and right brow bones are called "Fa Mei" (Hair Brow Carbuncle). Regardless of whether they occur at the head or tail of the eyebrow, caution is required. If the pathogenic attack occurs towards the brow head before ulceration, it will invade the eye and damage vision. If the attack proceeds downwards from the brow tail into the Taiyang channel region, one must also be vigilant.
A question was asked: What is the nature of carbuncle-toxin arising in the eyebrows? The answer is: This carbuncle originates from the eyebrow extending to the head, producing black sores that gradually swell and spread across the entire face. The sore heads are hard as stone; puncturing them yields no pus, only yellow fluid. The pain is unbearable, accompanied by mental confusion, nausea, and vomiting. This is caused by accumulated heat in the zang-fu organs and wind-toxin attacking upwards. One should urgently administer Zijin Dan (Purple Gold Pill) or Jin Dan (Golden Pill) to induce sweating; alternatively, use Huoming Yin (Life-Saving Decoction) added with Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), and Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), or Huanglian Xiaodu Yin (Coptis Detoxification Decoction), which are agents for descending fire and detoxifying. If yellow-white pus can be obtained after six or seven days through puncture, the condition is treatable. If the sore becomes dry, purple, and sunken, yielding no pus upon puncture, accompanied by vomiting, restlessness, coma, and inability to eat, it is a fatal case.
A question was asked: What is the nature of a carbuncle arising in the center of the eyebrows? The answer is: This is named "Bixin Ju" (Center-Brow Carbuncle), also known as "Mian Feng Du" (Facial Wind-Toxin). It belongs to the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Channel, generated by the accumulation and knotting of wind-heat and the stagnation of yin and yang qi. One should urgently administer Zijin Dan (Purple Gold Pill) or Chansu Wan (Toad Venom Pill) to induce sweating, or use Yili Jin Dan (One-Pill Golden Pill) to purge downward. If the color is black with severe pain, or if there is numbness or itching, accompanied by alternating chills and fever, it is a Ding (Hard Carbuncle).
(Details are found in the section on Miscellaneous Diseases of the Eyes and Eyesight; they are not repeated here.)
A question was asked: What is the nature of a carbuncle arising on the nasal bridge? The answer is: This is named "Bi Ju" (Nasal Carbuncle). It is caused by wind-heat of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Channel and stagnant fire in the Upper Jiao. Qianjin Loulu Tang (Thousand-Gold Rhaponticum Decoction) or Huoming Yin (Life-Saving Decoction) should be used, added with Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), Mutong (Akebia Stem), Bohe (Mentha Haplocalyx), and Jiegeng (Platycodon Root).
The *Gui Yi Ji* states: One location below the nose and two locations at the Renzhong point constitute "Fa Zi" (Hair Moustache Carbuncle). These often result from wind invading externally due to plucking the moustache, causing condensation. Attacks are irregular, with simultaneous chills and fever, and this condition is harmful to people.
A question was asked: What is the nature of swelling and sores arising in both cheeks and below the nose, with profuse flow of foul blood? The answer is: This is named "Ding Ju" (Ding Carbuncle). It belongs to the Yangming Stomach Channel. After three days, symptoms include locked jaws resembling spasm, opisthotonos (body bent backward like a bow), hardness upon palpation resembling a Ding, and piercing bone pain that is unbearable. One should urgently administer Wujin San (Black Metal Powder) or Huoming Yin (Life-Saving Decoction), added with Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), and Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit). For robust individuals, Yili Jin Dan (One-Pill Golden Pill) should be used to purge downward. If treatment is delayed, the toxin attacks the Heart, leading to vomiting, inability to eat, coma, agitation, and delirious speech, which indicates a fatal prognosis.
A question was asked: What is the nature of a carbuncle arising at the corner of the chin? The answer is: This is named "Zi Du" (Moustache Toxin). It is caused by wind-heat of the Foot-Yangming Channel. Huoming Yin (Life-Saving Decoction) should be used, added with Qin (Scutellaria Root), Lian (Coptis Rhizome), Xuanshen (Scrophularia Root), and Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), along with Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) to clear heat. For robust individuals, Yili Jin Dan (One-Pill Golden Pill) should be used to purge downward. If shaking reveals a root, muscle insensibility, numbness or itching, severe chills and fever, irritability, nausea, and vomiting occur, it is a Ding (Hard Carbuncle).
