According to the *Gui Yi Fang* (Ghost's Legacy): On both sides of the hairline, eruptions resembling millet grains appear; the tops are white while the roots are red. The area feels hot and painful, as if pierced by an awn. This condition is more common in women than in men. Initially, it is caused by wind-dampness attacking upward toward the hairline. Treatment should aim to discharge pus without damaging healthy qi. A question was raised: "What about sores arising at the hairline?" The answer is: This is called Hairline Sore (Faji Chuang). Its appearance resembles a water caltrop; it presents with diffuse swelling accompanied by aversion to cold and fever, or pain or itching. This is termed Hairline Carbuncle (Faji Ju), caused by the accumulation of wind-heat ascending upward. It is appropriate to administer Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Decoction for Unblocking the Supreme), Zijin Dan (Purple Gold Pill), and Mingdan Dan (Life-Seizing Pill) to induce sweating.
[Zhu Danxi]: Grind Fangfeng Tongsheng San into powder, soak in wine, then bake dry. Repeat this process three times. After meals, take the powder mixed with warm water, three doses per month. Efficacy is achieved when sweat appears on the head.
[Popular Prescription]: Wash the affected area with strongly brewed salt water once every three to five days, and apply Yishang San (First Application Powder). For chronic cases lasting many years, this yields miraculous results.
[Zhu Danxi]: Take high-quality Zixiao Tan (Purple Sky Charcoal), heat until red-hot, and quench in water. Repeat heating and quenching until the water becomes hot. Use this quenched water to wash the lesion daily, allowing the heat-toxin to disperse and heal externally. Apply a mixture of Huizizi (Coriander Seed), Fulonggan (Dragon Sitting Earth), Xuanlongwei (Dust from Roof Beams), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), and Baifan (Alum) ground into powder, mixed and applied topically. Additionally, taking Tongsheng San stir-fried with wine is effective.
Another single prescription: Apply Huanglian powder alone topically; repeated applications have proven effective.
A question was raised: "Sores arise on the head, resembling grapes, causing severe pain, yet failing to suppurate after a long time. What should be done?" The answer is: This is called Curly-Hair Sore (Quanmao Chuang); the treatment method is the same as above. One must carefully examine the sore. If the center is depressed while the margins are elevated, and the color resembles yellow wax, it is Guang Chuang (Broad Sore/Leprosy-like sore).
Songzhi Gao (Pine Resin Ointment): Treats head sores that persist for months or years without healing. Ingredients: Songzhi (Pine Resin), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, trimmed, each 37.5g), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Kushen (Sophora Root) (each 50g), Shechuangzi (Cnidium Fruit) (12.5g), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root), Baifan (Alum, calcined) (each 25g), Shuiyin (Mercury) (75g), Hufen (Lead Carbonate) (25g, combined with mercury and a little water, ground together until no silver specks remain). Grind all ingredients into a fine powder and mix uniformly. Blend with lard from the twelfth lunar month and apply to the sore; this is highly effective.
Beimu Gao (Fritillaria Ointment): Treats alopecia barbae/capitis associated with sores. Ingredients: Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, raw), Nanxing (Arisaema Rhizome), Wubeizi (Gallnut), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), Kushen (Sophora Root) (each 7.5g), Guodian (Red Lead Oxide) (4.5g), Xionghuang (Realgar) (3g). Grind into a fine powder. First, fumigate and wash the area with a decoction of Fengfang (Beechomb), Baizhi, Kushen, Dafupi (Areca Peel), and Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike), then dry. Mix with honey-water for topical application two to three times, then sprinkle dry powder afterwards.
Jiawei Pingwei San (Modified Pingwei Powder): Treats all kinds of malignant sores, including those on the head. Add Nifen (Calomel/Calomelous Mercury) to the original Pingwei San, blend with refined sesame oil, and apply topically; this is excellent.
Piaoxiao San (Cuttlebone Powder): Treats sores on the head, commonly known as Sticky Sore (Nian Chuang). Ingredients: Haipiaoxiao (Cuttlebone) (7.5g), Baijiaoxiang (Mastic Gum), Qingfen (Calomel) (each 25g). Grind into a fine powder and mix uniformly. First moisten the sore with refined sesame oil, then sprinkle the powder. Only one application is needed.
Prescription for Extremely Itchy but Non-Painful Head Sores: Bobofen (Pigeon Droppings) (150g). Mix with good vinegar to form a paste, boil for two or three boils. Apply twice or three times daily.
