If swelling appears initially accompanied by headache and fever, it indicates pathogenic factors in the exterior. Add Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong Radix) and Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo). If external pathogens are in the exterior but the primordial Qi is substantial, temporarily use Renshen Baidu San (Ginseng Detoxification Powder). Headache with aversion to cold indicates deficiency of the exterior; remove Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), and add Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma). Fatigue, headache, or dizziness indicates deficiency of Middle Qi; remove "three ingredients" (referring to specific herbs in the original formula context, here kept as 'three ingredients' for fidelity, likely referring to dispersing/clearing herbs not suitable for deficiency), add Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma). If there is no response, temporarily use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba) or Manjingzi (Vittatiae Fructus - note: text says Manjingzi, so Vitex Fruit). Afternoon headache or dizziness indicates deficiency of Yin-blood; remove "three ingredients", add Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata). If there is no response, assist with Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia). Nocturnal emission, dizziness, headache, or phlegm-wheezing with shortness of breath indicates Kidney deficiency failing to grasp Qi; remove "three ingredients" and Chuanxiong, assist with Liuwei Wan. If there is no response, it indicates severe deficiency-cold; use Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia).

Redness of the face and eyes, irritability, heat, thirst, and a pulse that is large but empty indicate blood deficiency leading to floating Yang and restlessness; remove "three ingredients", add Huangqi (Astragali Radix) and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix). If there is no response, temporarily use Danggui Buxue Tang (Danggui Tonifies Blood Decoction). Body heat, aversion to wearing clothes, desire to throw oneself into water, and a pulse that is deep, minute, and fine indicate Qi deficiency leading to floating Yang and restlessness; remove "three ingredients", add Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) and Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata). If there is no response, temporarily use Fuzi Lizhong Tang (Aconite Regulate the Middle Decoction).

Excessive thinking causing body pain, insomnia, and night sweats indicate Spleen-blood deficiency; remove "three ingredients", add Fuling (Poria), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), and Yuanyanrou (Longan Aril). If there is no response, temporarily use Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction). Sweating during sleep indicates Kidney-Qi deficiency; remove "three ingredients", add Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) decocted to take with Liuwei Wan. Sweating during eating indicates Stomach-Qi deficiency; remove "three ingredients", add Renshen, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Wuweizi. If there is no response, temporarily use Liujunzi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction). Night sweats after sleeping full and then waking indicate retained food; remove "three ingredients", add Renshen, Baizhu, and Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma). If there is no response, temporarily use Liujunzi Tang.

Chest fullness and excessive phlegm indicate Spleen-Qi deficiency; remove "three ingredients", add Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) and Banxia. If there is no response, temporarily use Liujunzi Tang with Jiegeng and Zhike (Aurantii Fructus). Afternoon heat and excessive phlegm indicate Spleen-blood deficiency; remove "three ingredients", add Danggui, Shudihuang, Renshen, and Baizhu. If there is no response, temporarily use Liujunzi Tang with Chuanxiong, Danggui, and Shudihuang. Cough with expectoration of phlegm indicates Kidney deficiency causing fluids to flood upward; remove "three ingredients", add Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), and Shudihuang. If there is no response, assist with Liuwei Wan.
