Use a chicken feather to gently sweep the surface of the sore. If the pus has not yet formed, apply it directly to the swollen area, and the swelling will subside spontaneously.
For any carbuncle (carbunculus), whether ulcerated or not, take a piece of adhesive plaster (jiao), soak it in water until soft, and according to the size of the swelling, paste it on the apex of the swelling with a hole opened at the center. If it is already ulcerated and contains pus, seal it with the adhesive to urgently promote the discharge of pus so that all pus is expelled; if no pus has formed yet, the swelling will subside spontaneously.
Secret method for treating back carbuncle (fabei): Li Beihai said, this prescription is divine and extremely unique. Take three large liang of Licorice Root (Gancao), crush it raw and sieve it into fine powder separately. Mix with nine liang of barley flour in one plate, stir evenly. Take a small amount of high-quality butter (su), knead it into the medicine separately until uniform. Then mix with boiling water to form a cake-like preparation. The diameter should be slightly larger than the sore by one fen. Apply hot compress to the swollen area, cover with oil paper to allow ventilation, and replace when cool. For those already formed with pus, the pus and fluid will discharge naturally; for those not yet formed, the swelling will dissipate internally.
Method of extracting pus through intact skin: Treats various types of swelling and toxicity.
Donkey Hoof (finely cut, one liang, stir-fried) Buckwheat Flour (one liang) White Salt (half liang) Aconitum Kusnezoffii Root (Caowu) (four qian, peeled)
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Mix with water to form a cake, roast slowly over low fire until yellow, remove the "fire toxin" (heat property), then grind again. Mix with rice vinegar to form a paste. Spread on white paper and apply to the affected area; the toxicity will exit through the hair follicles, and the swelling will recede.
Realgar Powder (Xionghuang San): Treats carbuncles and ulcers with redness, swelling, and pain. Apply to promote suppuration before natural rupture.
Realgar (Xionghuang) (fine powder) Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai) Areca Seed (Binglang) Rhubarb (Chuan Dahuang) Dragon's Blood (Qijie) (each seven and a half qian) Musk (Shexiang) (powdered, one qian) Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian) (one liang) Angelica Dahurica (Baizhi) Costus Root (Muxiong) Ligusticum Chuanxiong (Xiong) Cinnamon Twig (Guixin) (each half liang) Chinese Angelica Root (Danggui) (stir-fried, three qian)
Grind the above into fine powder. Mix with lard from the twelfth lunar month (La Zhuzhi) until uniform. Spread on silk fabric and apply to the swollen area. After pus ruptures, immediately use ointment to draw out toxins and generate flesh.
Wanying Zhentou Wan (from *Jisheng*): Treats all types of carbuncles on the head and back, severe toxic conditions, and critical large sores near death. One pill cures.
Musk (Shexiang) (two qian) Dragon's Blood (Xuejie) (use wax-like quality, not loose powder as it is not genuine) Calomel (Qingfen) Toad Venom (Chansu) (test for pungency on tongue) Sandarac (Sha) (each three qian) Borneol (Pian Nao) (one qian) Centipede (Wugong) (one pair, whole)
Grind the above into extremely fine powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills. If the sore has a head, puncture it with a needle tip until slight bleeding occurs. Place a grain-sized amount of medicine into the punctured wound. Cover with a paper flower, moisten the surrounding area with saliva, and apply warm pressure to the sore. It will heal within a short time. If a headless sore appears in the axilla, it is an "hidden ding" (anti-ding). Immediately puncture the white vein patterns inside the tiger's mouth (He Gu area) of both hands with a needle, and seal with medicine as described above. Avoid chicken, goose, alcohol, wet dough, and all heating foods.
Zhentou San (from *Baoming*): Treats sores with swelling, numbness, and hardness.
Take Frankincense (Ruxiang) and Toad Venom (Chansu), one qian each, grind together until fine. Mix with infant breast milk to form a mud-like consistency. Store in a porcelain box; dryness is acceptable. When using, mix with saliva, apply a small amount to the swollen area, and cover with an ointment patch. The toxic qi will dissipate spontaneously, and even if a sore forms, it will be mild.
Wanchui Qingyun Gao: Treats various carbuncles and swellings. Apply to dissipate if pus has not formed; extract toxins and draw out pus if formed; apply to abdominal masses for epigastric lumps; apply to Dazhui (GV14) and Shenzhu (GV12) acupoints for malaria, with miraculous effects.
White Pine Rosin (Bai Songxiang) (one jin, free of wood chips) Castor Seed (Bimazi) (three hundred grains, shelled) Apricot Kernel (Xingren) (three hundred pieces, peeled) Verdigris (Tongqing) (three liang) Frankincense (Ruxiang) Myrrh (Moyao) (each one liang and five qian) Calomel (Qingfen) (two qian)
Combine all ingredients. Use an iron hammer and wooden anvil to pound into a paste in sunlight. If too dry, add a little sesame oil and pound. Alternatively, use a stone mortar and wooden pestle. Store in porcelain vessels. Spread on crimson silk and apply. (Prepare in water, avoiding direct fire.)
