Boju (Fengju) refers to dot-like lesions suddenly appearing in the muscle tissue, resembling bean grains. Smaller ones are like millet or broomcorn millet seeds, while severe cases resemble plums or plums and apricots. The color may be red, black, green, or white, with indeterminate shapes. Some have roots but no edema or pain; upon injury, the pain feels as if it pierces the heart. The root is deep, reaching the muscle. After a long time, swelling spreads all around, turning dark purple-black, capable of rotting and destroying bone and tendons. If the toxin disperses and enters the viscera via the meridians, it can be fatal. In southern regions, this is called "Tuozhe Du" (Spreading Toxin). In fleshy areas, the lesion should be excised, or cauterized with a hot iron until charred like charcoal. Alternatively, moxibustion of one hundred cones may be applied, or drinking juice from Abutilon indicum roots, Isatis tinctoria leaves, Rhinoceros horn juice, Cimicifuga rhizome juice, or Zhu Li Huang Long Tang (Bamboo Juice Yellow Dragon Decoction), single prescriptions aimed at clearing heat to achieve recovery. This disease favors the ten fingers, thus resembling Daizhi (Paronychia); people who do not recognize it call it Daizhi. If not treated promptly, the toxin also travels up the meridians into the viscera, causing death. People in the south often amputate the finger upon contracting this. Initially, the fingertip turns dark red, followed by swelling and darkening, with pain piercing the heart.
Secret Recipe for Treating Boju:
Shé Gān (Belamcanda Rhizome), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange), Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Gan Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) (each 2 liang), She Xiang (Musk) (2 fen), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix) (3 fen), Xi Jiao (Rhinoceros Horn) (6 fen), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (10 fen).
The above ten ingredients are cut into small pieces. Decoct in 9 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng. Add Da Huang and boil briefly once. Strain and add She Xiang. Divide into three doses. Stop when recovered. No limit on dosage. This formula is rarely transmitted in the world but is miraculous and effective. (Wai Tai Mi Yao lacks Huang Qin. Shen Shi Formula adds Huang Qin, Ma Huang, Bai Wei, Zhi Shi, Sheng Ma, Song Ye.)
She Gan San (Belamcanda Powder): Treats Boju, where dot-like lesions suddenly appear in the skin and flesh, size of hemp or bean seeds, or like peaches and plums, with unbearable swelling and pain.
She Gan (Belamcanda Rhizome), Chuan Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange, bran-fried), Chuan Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, crushed, slightly fried), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, raw, each 1 liang), She Xiang (Musk, finely ground, 2 qian 5 fen), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix, de-rhizome, 1 liang 5 qian), Ling Yang Jiao Xie (Antelope Horn Shavings) (7 qian 5 fen).
Crush the herbs, mix evenly with She Xiang. Take 4 qian per dose. Decoct in one zhong of water until reduced to six parts. Strain. Warm and take at any time.
Dan Sha Gao (Cinnabar Ointment): Treats Boju.
Dan Sha (Cinnabar, finely ground), She Gan (Belamcanda Rhizome), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, crushed, fried), Xi Jiao Xie (Rhinoceros Horn Shavings), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix, de-rhizome), Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root, remove black heart), Chen Xiang (Aquilaria Lignum), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (each 1 liang), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root, 2 liang), She Xiang (Musk, 1 qian 2 fen 5 li, ground), Zhu Zhi (Pork Fat, 2 jin 5 liang).
Except for Dan Sha, She Xiang, and Zhu Zhi, crush the other ingredients. Mix with half sheng of vinegar and soak overnight. First boil the Zhu Zhi until bubbling, then add the herbs and decoct until Sheng Di Huang turns reddish-black. Strain through silk cloth. Add Dan Sha and She Xiang powders, stir evenly with a willow stick, and store in a porcelain box. Apply to the affected area three to five times daily. Alternatively, take a date-sized amount, mixed with warm wine, taken on an empty stomach and at noon. Another method: mix with warm water and take half a spoonful.
