Decoction for Disinfection: Treats wind-induced granular protrusions on the eyelids.
Rhubarb (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Schizonepeta (Herba Schizonepetae), Burdock Fruit (Fructus Arctii), Licorice (Radix Glycyrrhizae).
Boil the above ingredients in water and take warm after meals.
Saposhnikovia Decoction for Dissipating Nodules: Treats flesh warts (verrucae) appearing hiddenly at the roots of the upper and lower eyelashes; use manual methods to remove the lesion first, then administer this decoction.
Saposhnikovia Root (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Notopterygium Rhizome et Radix (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), White Peony Root (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Tail of Angelica Sinensis (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Poria (Sclerotium Poriae), Atractylodes Rhizome (Rhizoma Atractylodis), Angelica Pubescens Root (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Peucedanum Root (Radix Peucedani), Scutellaria Root (Radix Scutellariae) [each 5 fen], Honey-fried Licorice (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), Stephania Tetrandra Root (Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae) [each 6 fen], Safflower (Flos Carthami), Calamus Wood (Lignum Dalbergiae Odoriferae) [a small amount].
Take as one dose, add two cups of water, boil down to one cup, and take hot. Boil the dregs again.
In the above formula, Saposhnikovia Root and Notopterygium Rhizome are used as the Sovereign drug (Jun) to raise and diffuse Yang Qi. White Peony Root, Tail of Angelica Sinensis, Safflower, and Calamus Wood are used as the Minister drug (Chen) to break stagnation and promote blood circulation. Poria is used to drain pathogenic factors, Atractylodes Rhizome to remove dampness from the upper body, Peucedanum Root to benefit the five Zang organs, Angelica Pubescens Root to dispel wind pathogens, and Scutellaria Root to treat heat toxicity proliferation; these serve as the Assistant drug (Zuo). Licorice harmonizes the various herbs, and Stephania Tetrandra Root acts as the Envoy drug (Shi) to circulate through the twelve meridians. For lesions on the upper eyelid, add Coptis Rhizome (Rhizoma Coptidis) and Bupleurum Root (Radix Bupleuri), because the Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian are affected. For lesions on the lower eyelid, add Ligusticum Wallichii Rhizome (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong) and Vitex Fruit (Fructus Viticis Negundo), because the Hand Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian is affected.
Five-Flower Pill: Treats dacryocystitis (Lou Jing syndrome) with pus discharge, where wind-heat lingers in the palpebral conjunctiva, condensing into pus mixed with tears, often flowing like saliva. If untreated for a long time, it may lead to the prolapse or loss of the cornea (Wu Zhu).
Golden Fern Herb (Herba Filicis Japonicae) (4 liang), Morinda Officinalis Root (Radix Morindae Officinalis) (3 liang), Sichuan Pepper Peel (Pericarpium Zanthoxyli), Goji Berry (Fructus Lycii), White Chrysanthemum Flower (Flos Chrysanthemi Indici) [each 2 liang].
Grind into fine powder, make pills with refined honey, size of Loropetalum chinense seeds. Take 20 pills per dose. Administer on an empty stomach with salted wine.
Bletilla Pill: Treats dacryocystitis (Lou Jing syndrome) with pus discharge.
Bletilla Tuber (Tuber Bletillae Striatae) (5 qian), Saposhnikovia Root (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Tribulus Fruit (Fructus Tribuli), Pomegranate Rind (Cortex Granati), Notopterygium Rhizome et Radix (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii) [each 3 qian].
Grind into fine powder, make pills with rice flour paste, size of Loropetalum chinense seeds. Take 20 pills per dose, administered with plain boiled water.
Sugar-Fried Powder (See External Obstruction chapter).
Treats continuous purulent discharge from the eyes.
Astragalus Root (Radix Astragali), Saposhnikovia Root (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Rhubarb (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Scutellaria Root (Radix Scutellariae) [each 3 liang], Ginseng (Radix Ginseng), Polygala Root (Radix Polygalae) (decored), Bark of Moutan (Cortex Moutan), Red Poria (Sclerotium Poriae cum Rubo), Rhizoma Euphorbiae Humifusae (Rhizoma Euphorbiae Humifusae) [each 2 liang].
Take 5 qian per dose, boil in water, and take after meals.
Bamboo Leaf Decoction for Clearing the Meridians: Treats eyes feeling slightly astringent and blurry vision, internal opening sensation like needle pricks, eye pain, and oozing pus upon pressure.
Bupleurum Root (Radix Bupleuri), Gardenia Fruit (Fructus Gardeniae), Notopterygium Rhizome et Radix (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), Cimicifuga Rhizome (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Honey-fried Licorice (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), Coptis Rhizome (Rhizoma Coptidis), Rhubarb (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) [each 5 fen], Red Peony Root (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Cassia Seed (Semen Cassiae), Poria (Sclerotium Poriae), Plantago Seed (Semen Plantaginis), Alisma Rhizome (Rhizoma Alismatis) [each 4 fen], Scutellaria Root (Radix Scutellariae) (6 fen), Fresh Bamboo Leaves (Folium Bambusae Viridis) (10 slices).
Take as one dose, add two cups of water, boil down to one cup, and take slightly warm after meals.
The above formula employs a counter-attacking method. First, herbs regulating the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian and Foot Taiyang Bladder Meridian are used as the Sovereign drug (Jun), namely Bupleurum Root and Notopterygium Rhizome. The generative intent of these two meridians is governed by the Spleen and Stomach; therefore, herbs regulating the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian are used as the Minister drug (Chen), namely Cimicifuga Rhizome and Licorice. The Liver Meridian is rich in blood, so herbs that unblock blood vessels and eliminate Liver pathogens are used; the Bladder Meridian is prone to dampness, so herbs that promote urination and eliminate Bladder dampness are used as the Assistant drug (Zuo), namely Red Peony Root, Cassia Seed, Alisma Rhizome, Poria, and Plantago Seed. To generally break accumulated heat, herbs that attack, open, drain, and clear are used as the Envoy drug (Shi), namely Gardenia Fruit, Scutellaria Root, Coptis Rhizome, Rhubarb, and Bamboo Leaves.
Honey Agent Detoxification Pill: Treats the same syndrome as above.
Rock Sugar (refined, 1 jin), Gardenia Fruit (Fructus Gardeniae) (10 liang, powdered), Rhubarb (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) (5 liang, powdered), Apricot Kernel (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) (skin and tip removed, 2 liang, ground separately).
Make pills with honey, size of Loropetalum chinense seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, increasing up to 100 pills, administered with tea soup.
In the above formula, Apricot Kernel is sweet and moistening to treat dryness, serving as the Sovereign drug (Jun), because dryness is the origin of heat. Gardenia Fruit is slightly bitter and cold to treat irritability, serving as the Minister drug (Chen), because irritability is produced by heat. Rock Sugar is sweet, neutral, and warm, calming the Five Zang organs, serving as the Assistant drug (Zuo), because it detoxifies and eliminates pathogens. Rhubarb is bitter and cold, its nature moving without staying, draining various excess heats, serving as the Envoy drug (Shi), to attack accumulation and prevent it from becoming stubborn and unresolved.
Dongyuan Dragon Gallbladder Decoction: Treats malnutrition eye disease (Gan Yan) with pus flow and Gan Yi (corneal opacity), caused by damp-heat.
Scutellaria Root (Radix Scutellariae) (stir-fried), Green Clam Powder (Concha Meretricis Cyprini Viridis), Gentian Root (Radix Gentianae) (stir-fried with wine until scorched), Notopterygium Rhizome et Radix (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii) [each 3 qian], Cimicifuga Rhizome (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) (2 qian), Ephedra Stem (Herba Ephedrae) (1.5 qian), Snake Slough (Cutis Serpentis), Eyebright Herba (Herba Euphrasiae), Curcuma Root (Rhizoma Curcumae), Honey-fried Licorice (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) [each 0.5 qian].
Grind into fine powder, mix with tea and take 2 qian after meals.
