Longchi San (Dragon Tooth Powder): Treats tinnitus where kidney deficiency allows heat-toxin to invade the ear due to deficiency, causing constant cicada-like ringing in the ear. Do not solely administer tonifying medicines.
Ingredients: Longchi (Dragon Tooth), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Baifuling (Poria), Menmendong (Ophiopogon Tuber, heart removed), Yuanzhi (Polygala Root, heart removed), each half liang; Dansha (Cinnabar), Tie Fen (Iron Powder), Longnao (Borneol), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), Shexiang (Musk), each two qian and half. All are separately ground into fine powder.
Process these into a fine powder and mix evenly. Take half a qian bi (a small measuring spoon) per dose, mixed with boiling water after meals, three times daily.
Huangqi Wan (Astragalus Pill):
Ingredients: Huangqi (Astragalus Root) (one liang), Shayuan Jili (Aster Tataricus Seed, stir-fried), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), each half liang; Hei Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root, large one), Jieyang Shen (Ram Kidney, one pair, baked dry).
Process these into a fine powder, make pills using wine paste, sized like tung seeds. Take forty pills per dose before empty stomach and before meals, washed down with decoction of roasted scallions and salt water.
Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) (see Polydipsia/Qi Transformation Disorder). Qingmuxiang Wan (Blue Sandalwood Pill) (see Qi Disorders).

Take three qian per dose, add two zhan (units of volume) of water, along with Zisu (Perilla Leaf), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), and Zaoju (Jujube), decoct until one zhan remains, remove dregs, and take at any time. If deficiency-cold is severe, add raw Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) according to discretion.
Chaihu Cong'er Tang (Bupleurum Ear-Opening Decoction): Treats dry cerumen in the ear and deafness caused by tinnitus.
Ingredients: Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) (three qian), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit) (four qian), Shuizhi (Leech) (half qian, stir-fried, separately ground), Mengchong (Bladderfly Larva) (three, wings and feet removed, ground), Shexiang (Musk) (a little, ground), Dangguishen (Body of Angelica Sinensis Root), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Zhigancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), each one qian.
Except for those to be separately ground, add two zhan of water and three slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) to the other ingredients, decoct until one zhan remains. When slightly warm, add the powders of Shuizhi (Leech) etc., boil for one or two more boils, and take slightly warm long after meals.
Zhi Xiong San (Angelica Dahurica and Ligusticum Powder): Treats deficiency-type tinnitus caused by wind invading the ear.
Ingredients: Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Shichangpu (Acorus Rhizome, stir-fried), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), Chenpi (Dried Tangerine Peel), Xixin (Asarum Root), Nongpo (Magnolia Bark, processed), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, processed), Lagui (Cinnamon Twig), Mutong (Akebia Stem), Zisu Jingye (Perilla Stem and Leaf), Zhigancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), each one fen; Chuanxiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome) (two fen).
Cut these into pieces. Take three qian per dose, add five slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and two roots of Congbai (Scallion White), decoct, and take after meals and before sleep.
Shexiang San (Musk Powder): Treats deficiency-type tinnitus in the ear.
Ingredients: Shexiang (Musk) (half qian), Quanxie (Scorpion) (fourteen), Bohe (Mint Herb) (fourteen leaves, wrap Shexiang (Musk) and Quanxie (Scorpion), bake dry on tile).
Process these into a fine powder, add a few drops of water to knead into stick shapes, and insert into the ear canal. This is extremely effective.
Treatment for Noisy Tinnitus:
Ingredients: Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit), Badou (Croton Seed, skin removed, stir-fried), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Shichangpu (Acorus Rhizome), Cishi (Magnetite), Xixin (Asarum Root), each one fen.
Process these into powder. Mix with a small amount of Egao (Goose Fat/Fungus base), wrap in cotton, and insert into the ear. Wrap five sheng (units of volume) of salt in cloth, steam and apply hot compress to the ear gate, allowing warm qi to enter the ear. Replace when cold. Repeat several times. After recovery, often roll up loose hair and plug the ear, strictly avoiding wind. Another prescription excludes Cishi (Magnetite).
