Black Snake (Wushe)
Non-toxic. Primarily treats various wind-induced skin itching, urticaria, tinea, cutaneous anesthesia, stubborn bi-syndrome, and other wind disorders. It is used after roasting, incorporated into pills and powders, soaked in wine, or made into ointments.
It has three keels on its back, with a color black as lacquer. Its nature is gentle, and it does not bite objects. In the Jiangdong region, there is the Black-tailed Keelback, which can coil around objects to death; it also belongs to this category. It is produced in Shangluo Mountains.
(Added later by subsequent authors)
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully note according to *Yaoxing Lun* (Treatise on Medicinal Properties): Black Snake, as a sovereign drug, has a sweet taste and neutral nature, with slight toxicity. It can treat heat-toxic wind, sores on skin and muscles, loss of eyebrows and beard, as well as itching and scabies.
*Tujing Bencao* (Illustrated Classic of Materia Medica) records: Black Snake is produced in Shangluo Mountains; nowadays, it is also found in the mountains of Qizhou and Huangzhou. It has three keels on its back, with a color black as lacquer. Its nature is extremely gentle, and it does not bite.
*Shenghui Fang* (Prescriptions from the Holy Grace Bureau) records: Treating facial sores and... *Yirong Fang* (Prescriptions for Facial Appearance) records: Use two liang of Black Snake, burn it to ash and powder, mix with lard from the twelfth lunar month, and apply externally. *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) records: Treating deafness.
Wrap the snake fat in cotton and insert it into the ear; the effect is miraculous. *Chaoye Qianzai* (Records of the Court and the World) records: A person in Shangzhou suffered from Da Feng disease (leprosy). His family members despised him and built a thatched hut for him in the mountains. A Black Snake fell into a wine jar. Unaware of this, the patient drank the wine and gradually recovered. Later, they found snake bones at the bottom of the jar and realized the reason.
*Yanyi* (Expanded Meaning) records: For Black Snake, if the tail is slender and long enough to pass through a hole pierced in one hundred copper coins, it is considered excellent. Some individuals are over ten zhang long. Among snakes, this species is used most frequently in medicine.
I once saw a Black Snake on the dike of Tangluo in Xu'an Army, over ten zhang long. A mouse and a wild wolf bit its head and dragged it away; this demonstrates mutual fear and subjugation among creatures.
Those sold in the market are often fakes, where other snakes are smoked to turn them black for sale. One must not fail to examine this carefully. The Black Snake has a high dorsal ridge, known in the world as "Jianji Wushao" (Sword-backed Black Keelback).
Golden Snake (Jinshe)
Non-toxic. Resolves the toxicity of raw gold (mercury/quicksilver). If a person is poisoned by gold medicine, take a four-cun long snake, roast it until yellow, boil it in water to make a decoction, and drink it frequently until recovery.
It is as thick as a middle finger and about one chi long. It often climbs trees to drink dew, its body appearing golden and shining in the sunlight. There is also the Silver Snake, which resolves silver medicine toxicity. To diagnose human poisoning by gold, the method is: close the eyes, hold silver in the mouth, and by dawn, if the silver turns golden, it indicates the presence of the Golden Snake. It causes the flesh to develop chicken-foot-like cracks. It is produced in Binzhou and Chengzhou. (Added later by subsequent authors)
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully note according to Chen Cangqi: Golden Snake has a salty taste and neutral nature.
