[Preparation of Yu Fat]
Toxic. Indicated for wind-induced swelling, carbuncles and toxic sores, urticaria (skin eruptions with red or pale wheals accompanied by itching), erythematous pruritus and scabies, hemorrhoids, stubborn numbness of the skin, traumatic fractures and injuries, muscle damage, and blood stasis. Application method: Apply the fat to the affected area, warm the hands by rubbing them together until hot, and massage the area; the medicinal effect will penetrate immediately. It is produced in the Lingnan region. Its appearance resembles a snake's head and a turtle's body. The "Guangzhou Ji" records: "Yu" has a snake's head and a turtle's body; it lives both in water and on trees. It is commonly called "Yu Gao" (Yu Paste) and is indicated for leech bites. It should be stored in copper or earthenware vessels, from which the oil can be extracted. Only chicken eggshells prevent leakage when used as containers. Massaging this substance for toxic swelling is highly effective; its penetrating power exceeds that of Tihu (the essence of clarified butter).
[Xi Shu (Small Mouse)]
Toxic. It can kill birds and beasts. It is used in the preparation of She Wang (a type of poison). People also catch Xi Shu alive and place it under pillows, believing it promotes harmony between husband and wife. It is found among sand and rocks, where it creates spiral holes. Inside are insects the size of soybeans, with spines on their backs, capable of moving backward. They are also known as "Dao Xing Gou Zi" (Back-walking Dog). They have a strong tendency to sleep and are also called "Shui Chong" (Sleeping Insect); they are found everywhere.
[Parts of Xi Shu]
Greatly cold in nature. Indicated for redness, heat, and pain in the eyes and skin. Take a large Xi Shu, wash it thoroughly, cut it open, and let the juice drip into the eyes. Even chronic redness of the skin lasting thirty years can be cured.
[Mating Habits]
These two entities (referring to the mouse and its associated parasite or related matter), though of different species, inhabit the same burrow and are distinguished as male and female; wearing them is believed to foster affection between people. Collected on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, they should be worn by couples.
[Zhong Si (Katydids)]
Zhong Si resembles locusts. People in the East call them "Ze Meng." They are toxic. Those with black spots should be caught during their mating period.
[Tao Jia Worm/Ash]
It fosters fondness and mutual affection. It originates from Tao Jia in Lingnan and appears as a bluish-gray powder. Locals store it in bamboo tubes, claiming it is the ash excreted by Nuo worms (Nuo, pronounced 'hui', refers to roundworm-like parasites). This ash can be used to wipe objects. These worms tend to harm children, chickens, and dogs. If not kept in the home, the veracity of these claims remains unknown.
[Beetle]
The efficacy is the same as described above. People take it to wear. This beetle has a bright green back and wings concealed beneath its elytra. It is produced in Bin Zhou and Cheng Zhou in Lingnan.
[Brown Flat Beetle]
Also referred to as [Character missing]. The efficacy is the same as above; people take it to wear. It resembles a KT pan, is brownish in color, and has a flat body. It is produced in Lingnan and is highly valued by people.
[Eating Insect/Sand Mite]
Toxic. It eats the skin of humans, cattle, horses, etc., causing ulcers, and the victim may die without feeling pain. This insect is extremely fine and cannot be seen immediately. The "Er Ya" states: "There is a poisonous insect that eats people away until nothing is left, yet the person does not know." The "Zuo Zhuan" says: "It is the insect that eats the horns of sacrificial oxen." The "Bao Wu Zhi" states: "Insects that eat dead human skin cause malignant ulcers; most cases are caused by this insect." The treatment method involves massaging the affected area with cat (Li Mao) fat and consuming cat meat. Whenever mice are eaten in the first lunar month, if the remnants are mostly mouse flesh and bleeding occurs from small holes, this indicates the disease caused by such insects.
