Insect on Goji Berry: Salty in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. Primarily benefits the pathway of Yang, enhancing luster and fertility. Harvested when it forms a cocoon and becomes a pupa, dried in the sun, roasted until yellow, and mixed with dried Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Di Huang) to form pills for ingestion; greatly boosts Yang and enriches essence. This insect resembles a silkworm and feeds on goji berry leaves.
Two-headed Snake: Sweet in flavor, neutral in nature, slightly toxic. Primarily treats "Fei Shi" (flying corpse disease, an acute condition), roundworms, sweet taste in the mouth, wind-induced pruritus, head sores, dental diseases, removes tinea and scabies, and is applied to sores caused by mountain toad or mosquito bites penetrating the skin initially; heals upon manifestation. Found in Linhai and Kuaiji; large specimens reach one chi in length, and their bristles can be used as hairpins. Yu Xiaofu replied to Emperor Jin: "The weather was still warm, so it was not ready for tribute; these are from Kuaiji." Stored in sealed containers with hot rice, it generates toxic fumes that can cause death. Cui Bao stated: In the Liaohai region, there is a flying insect resembling a dragonfly, named Gan Weng (Gan Ong). In July, they fly in swarms darkening the sky. The Yi people eat them, claiming they transform from shrimp. Additionally, Du Taiqing's "Huai Fu" states: Locusts transform into pheasants, and enter water to become clams/shells.
Grub (Qicao): Pungent in flavor, neutral in nature, slightly toxic. Primarily treats blood stasis and labor accumulation, amenorrhea with irregular menstruation, lower back and spine pain, and phlegm-rheum in the heart and abdomen. Those found in peach wood kill ghosts and dispel evil qi; those found in cinnamon wood are pungent, sweet, edible, and dispel cold qi. Resembles a grub, with long segments and short legs, living in rotting wood, boring through wood like an awl or knife, transforming into wings in spring. Also known as Xie. The "Erya" states: Xie refers to Jie Du (wood-boring larvae). The commentary notes: It is a wood-boring insect. Su Gong verified: The term Qicao is a deep error/misnomer.
Bamboo Bee: Sweet in flavor, cold in nature. Primarily treats toothache and oral ulcers; holding it in the mouth alleviates symptoms. The bee is about the size of a little finger, entirely black. It nests by gnawing bamboo. Its honey is thick like syrup, sweet and sour, and delicious. The "Fang Yan" states: Liu Shi is the Bamboo Bee.
Two-headed Snake (Reiteration): The head is highly toxic, the tail is benign. There is a constriction in the middle; cut at this point. Using the head combined with other drugs makes the medicine lethal to humans. People in Lingnan call it "Lan Yao" (Blue Medicine). The antidote involves making the tail into jerky and feeding it to the victim, which cures the poisoning. The Lan Snake resembles the Viper, has a constriction, and is found in various counties of Cangwu. The head is toxic, the tail is benign.
Seeing it brings bad luck. It is as thick as a finger, with one end lacking eyes and mouth, yet both heads can move. Found in Kuaiji; people say it is the bowstring of King Yue. In ancient times, Sun Shu'ao buried it, fearing that if others saw it, it would surely lead to death. Seeing a snake with legs is also considered inauspicious. Burning a snake with mulberry fire causes its legs to appear; there is nothing strange about this.
