[Laque Tree Bark]
Bitter in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Treats jaundice; burn the bark to ash and administer one *fangcun bi* (an ancient measuring spoon, approximately equivalent to one modern spoonful). Grows in the south, with slender leaves; this is the species currently used for making combs. (Newly supplemented content: See Chen Cangqi, Ri Hua Zi.)
[Wood Hibiscus Bark]
Bitter in taste, cold in nature, non-toxic. Clears irritability and heat, resolves alcohol-induced jaundice with yellowing of the eyes; decoct and take orally. Also suitable for washing burns, scalds, lacquer dermatitis, and red eye conditions. Can be used for dyeing yellow. Grows in the valleys of Shangluo, with round leaves and yellowish trunk; very abundant in the Chuan region. (Newly supplemented content: See Chen Cangqi, Ri Hua Zi.) Yang Shi's *Chanru Ji* records that for treating lacquer dermatitis, washing with decoction of *Dalbergia hupeana* (Huanglu) water is most effective.
[Palmae Fruit]
Neutral in nature, non-toxic. Astringes the intestines, stops diarrhea and dysentery, intestinal wind bleeding, metrorrhagia, leukorrhea, and nourishes blood.
[Palmae Bark]
Neutral in nature, non-toxic. Stops epistaxis and hematemesis, breaks up masses (*zheng*), treats metrorrhagia, leukorrhea, intestinal wind with red and white dysentery. For medicinal use, it must be burned to charcoal; do not over-burn. (Newly supplemented content: See Chen Cangqi, Ri Hua Zi.)
*Tujing* states: Palmae, also called *Lu*, grows in Lingnan and Xichuan, and is also found in Jiangnan. The tree is one or two zhang high, without lateral branches. Leaves are large and round, growing dichotomously at branch tips. There are overlapping sheaths covering all sides, each complete ring constituting one node. Harvested every twenty days, new growth occurs above. Yellow-white flowers appear in June and July. Fruits mature in August and September, resembling fish roe in clusters, black in color. The bark and wood are harvested in September and October. *Shan Hai Jing* states: On the mountain of Shicui (or Cuicui), the trees are mostly palm-like, referring to this plant.
*Yanyi* states: Palmae wood is now turned into vessels by people. The bark is burned to black ash to treat uterine bleeding and hematemesis, usually combined with other herbs. The palm fiber is scraped off annually; otherwise, the tree will be strangled to death. The flowers resemble fish roe; when cooked thoroughly, they can be pickled as fruit.
[Palmae Root]
Neutral in nature, non-toxic. Stops intestinal wind bleeding; primarily treats heat and thirst following dysentery. Prepared as a drink, it induces sleep. For medicinal use, stir-fry before use. Its juice facilitates winding silk threads easily.
[Wood Hibiscus Flower]
Cool in nature, non-toxic. Treats intestinal wind bleeding, red and white dysentery; stir-fry before use. Decoct as tea substitute to treat wind pathogens. (Newly supplemented content: See Chen Cangqi, Ri Hua Zi.)
*Yanyi* states: Wood hibiscus resembles small sunflowers; flowers are pale red, composed of five petals, opening in the morning and closing in the evening. Both flowers and branches are usable. In Hunan and northern regions, households often plant them as hedges. The rest follows the classic texts.
