Bai Lian (Ampelopsis Radix)
Taste: Bitter, Sweet. Nature: Neutral, Slightly Cold. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Mainly treats carbuncles, sores, and ulcers; disperses stagnant Qi, relieves pain, clears heat, treats redness of the eyes, pediatric convulsions and epilepsy, warm malaria, swelling and pain in the female vagina, bloody and white leukorrhea, and neutralizes fire toxins. Also known as Tuhe, Baicao, Baigen, or Kunlun. Grows in the valleys of Mount Hengshan. Roots are harvested in February and August, then dried in the sun. (Guided by Dai Zhe [Hematitum]; incompatible with Wu Tou [Aconiti Lateralis Radix].)
Tao Hongjing stated: It is found everywhere near the roads. It grows as a vine; the root resembles Bai Zhi [Angelicae Dahuricae Radix], broken into pieces and threaded on bamboo sticks for sun-drying. Fresh roots crushed and applied to carbuncles are also effective. The annotation in *Tang Bencao* notes: This root resembles Tian Men Dong [Asparagi Rhizoma]; one plant has about ten roots underneath, with reddish-black skin and white flesh, resembling Shao Yao [Paeoniae Radix], and bears no resemblance to Bai Zhi.臣 Yuxi et al., according to *Shu Ben Tu Jing*, state: It grows as a vine, with five leaves at the branch tips. It is now available everywhere. *Yao Xing Lun* states: When used as an assistant herb, Bai Lian neutralizes fire toxins. Taste: Bitter, Nature: Neutral, Toxicity: Toxic. Averse to Wu Tou [Aconiti Lateralis Radix]. It can mainly treat Qi stagnation and swelling. Used with Chi Xiao Dou [Vigna Semen Adzukii] and Gan Cao [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma] ground into powder, mixed with egg white for topical application to all kinds of toxic swellings, treating facial sores. The seeds treat warm malaria, main indications include alternating chills and fever, and stagnant heat swellings. Ri Huazi stated: Stops fright and evil pathogens, treats back carbuncles, scrofula, intestinal wind and hemorrhoids, knife and arrow wounds, traumatic injuries, warm-heat malaria, bloody dysentery, scalds and burns, promotes tissue regeneration and relieves pain.
*TU JING* states: Bai Lian grows in the valleys of Mount Hengshan. Now it is found in Jianghuai prefectures and cities, as well as in Jing, Xiang, Huai, Meng, Shang, and Qi prefectures. Seedlings emerge in February, mostly growing as vines in forests, with red stems and leaves resembling small mulberry leaves. Flowers bloom in May, fruits set in July. The root resembles a chicken or duck egg, with three to five roots sharing the same cluster, reddish-black skin, and white flesh. Roots are harvested in February and August, broken into pieces, and dried in the sun. Currently, physicians use it frequently in formulas for treating wind diseases, metallic wounds, and facial preparations. In Haozhou, there is a variety called Chi Lian, which has the same efficacy as Bai Lian, and its flowers and fruits are similar, but both the exterior and interior are red.
*Shenghui Fang*: To treat ding sores (hard, deep-rooted boils), mix Bai Lian powder with water and apply to the sore. *Waitai Miyao Beiji*: For treating scalds and burns that have ulcerated, apply Bai Lian powder. *Zhouhou Fang*: For treating back carbuncles, applying Bai Lian powder is excellent.
*Yanyi* states: Bai Lian and Bai Ji [Bletillae Rhizoma] are rarely used in ancient and modern internal administration formulas, but are commonly seen in formulas for astringing sores. These two herbs often work synergistically.
