Baiqing (a mineral drug) tastes sweet, sour, and salty; it is neutral in nature and non-toxic. It primarily benefits the eyes, unblocks the nine orifices, treats deafness, eliminates pathogenic qi under the heart, induces vomiting, and kills various toxic parasites. Long-term consumption clarifies the spirit, lightens the body, prolongs life, and prevents aging. It can be melted to cast copper swords for warding off five types of weapons. It grows in the valleys of Yuzhang. There is no fixed time for harvesting.
Tao Hongjing stated: This medicinal material is no longer used in medical prescriptions, nor is it sold in markets; it is occasionally required only in certain formulas within the "Thirty-Six Waters Method" of the Immortal Classics. The method for casting copper swords is detailed in the "Techniques of Jiu Yuanzi." The annotation of the New Tang Materia Medica states: What Tao Hongjing described refers to the current Kongqing (Azurite), which is round like an iron bead, white in color, and hollow inside. When ground, its color is white like jade, also known as Biqing (Greenish-White), but it is not used for painting. In the absence of Kongqing, this substance may be used as a substitute, named Yumuming Qing (Fish-Eye Green) due to its resemblance to fish eyes. Those produced in Jianzhou and Zizhou are currently considered superior.
Lüqing
Tastes sour; it is cold in nature and non-toxic. It primarily tonifies Qi, treats rhinitis (nasal congestion with discharge), and stops dysentery. It grows in caves on the shady side of mountains, appearing greenish-white.
Tao Hongjing stated: This is the pigment used for painting green, which is also derived from Kongqing as a byproduct. Current painters call it Biqing, while referring to Kongqing as Lüqing, which is exactly reversed. The annotation of the New Tang Materia Medica states: Lüqing is Bianqing, called Shilü (Stone Green) by painters. The Biqing mentioned therein is Baiqing, which is not used for painting.
The Illustration of Materia Medica states: Lüqing is now called Shilü. Old texts do not specify the provinces of origin, stating only that it grows in caves on the shady side of mountains. The Classic of Materia Medica, above the entry for Kongqing, notes: It grows in the valleys of Yizhou and in Yue Mountains where copper exists; this substance likely grows in the shady areas of these mountains. It is currently produced in Shaozhou and Xinzhou. Its color is greenish-white, which painters use for green pigments. Large blocks exist, featuring lovely greenish-white patterns. People in Xinzhou carve them into belt rings and women's ornaments. For medicinal use, one should select granular pieces resembling frankincense without stone impurities. Current physicians often use it to induce vomiting of wind-phlegm. The method is as follows: Select high-quality material, crush and sieve it, then wash with water (water levigation) until extremely fine, and grind again. For dizziness and oppression caused by wind-phlegm, take two or three qianbi (small spoonfuls), mix evenly with three or four grains of raw Borneolum Syntheticum (Longnao), and administer warm with wine mixed with fresh Menthae Haplocalycis Juice (Bohe). Have the patient lie down for a moment; phlegm will naturally flow from the corner of the mouth, and the condition will resolve without vomiting. Its effect is faster than other drugs. Currently, people use it with frequent success, so this method is appended here. Another entry below states: Bianqing grows in the valleys of Zhuya and Zhuti in Wudu. Su Gong stated: It is Lüqing. Those coming from Hainan are block-shaped, as large as fists, darker green in color, and sometimes hollow inside, though such colors are rarely seen today. It is also found in Wuchang, Jianzhou, and Zizhou, but is no longer used.
The Definition of Materia Medica states: Lüqing is Shilu. Stones that are dark green are superior; large ones can be carved into figurines or made into vessels. Additionally, when combined with Cinnabar (Zhusha) to make medicines for inducing vomiting of wind-phlegm, although effective, it damages the Heart and Lungs.
