[Salfructus / Salt-Rhus Fruit]
Taste is sour, nature is slightly cold, non-toxic. Eliminates phlegm-fluids (Tan Yin), malarial fevers due to miasma (Zhang Nue), treats heat accumulation in the throat causing Bi syndrome of the throat (Hou Bi), stops thirst, resolves alcohol toxicity, jaundice, Flying Corpse and Gu poison, alleviates alternating chills and fever, treats cough with phlegm, reverses graying hair, promotes hair growth.
Take the dried fruit, crush into powder, and ingest. People in Lingnan use it to prevent miasma.
[White Bark of the Tree]
Primarily treats blood stasis, stops bleeding, Gu poison, bloody dysentery, kills roundworms and Gu parasites. All are taken as decoctions orally.
[White Bark of the Root]
Primarily treats Jaundice caused by alcohol (Jiu Dan). Crush, soak in rice washing water overnight, take one to two Sheng warm on an empty stomach at dawn.
[Leaves]
Leaves resemble those of Toona sinensis, growing in valleys of Wu and Shu regions. Fruits mature in autumn forming spikes, grains like small beans. Covered with salt-like frost resembling snow; tastes sour and salty when eaten and stops thirst. Also known as Pan Nu Yan (Rebel Slave Salt). (Note added later)
Minister Yu Xi et al. respectfully note:
Chen Cangqi states: The fruit effectively treats head wind (Tou Feng) causing white dandruff.
Ri Hua Zi states: The globular structures on Salfructus leaves treat poisoning from Gu toxins and other poisons, with identical efficacy.
Chen Cangqi states: People in Shu call it "Suan Tong" (Sour Barrel). *Baowu Zhi* states: "Suan Tong" produces spikes in July; people in Shu call it "Zhu Yin"; there is a substance attached to the spikes, which people refer to as salt.
[Cinnamomum Camphora Wood / Shan Cai]
Nature is slightly warm, non-toxic. Primarily treats lacquer dermatitis (Qi Chuang).
Tao Hongjing states: Scrape the bark, boil, and wash the lacquer dermatitis. It heals immediately without exception. There is also a plant called "Shu Cha," growing about one Chi above ground; boiling it and washing the lacquer dermatitis often leads to recovery. There is also "Qi Gu," with fine leaves, mostly growing beside stones. It also treats lacquer dermatitis. The chicken eggs and crabs mentioned are from older prescriptions. Tang Ben Zhu states: Shan Cai wood...
Minister Yu Xi et al. respectfully note: Ri Hua Zi states: Taste is pungent.
Treats wind toxicity, Ben Tun (rushing qi), Huo Luan (cholera-like disorder), regulates Qi. All are taken as decoctions or used for washing/fumigation. Must be oily Shan wood with a strong odor for best effect.
*Tujing* states: Shan Cai was not recorded in old texts regarding its origin. Now it is abundant in deep mountains of the South. The wood resembles pine but is stiff and straight; leaves grow attached to branches like needles. *Erya* states: "(Pronounced Bi), (same as Shan)." Guo Pu's commentary states: Resembles pine, grows in Jiangnan. Can be used for boats and coffins, pillars, buckets, and planks; very water-resistant. Physicians take its nodes, boil them for juice, soak and massage Hong Jiao Jiao (foot swelling/pain), with excellent effect. Liu Zongyuan of Tang compiled *Jiu San Si Fang* (Prescriptions to Save Three Deaths): In the second month of the 12th year of Yuanhe, I contracted Hong Jiao Jiao. At midnight, my breath became blocked and cut off, with a mass under the ribs as large as a stone, near death. I took one Da Sheng of Shan nodes (text implies specific part), one Da Sheng of Citrus reticulata leaves (chopped) (in the north, bark can substitute for leaves), seven Da Fu Bing Lang (betel nuts, crushed with shells), three Da Sheng of urine from an uncircumcised boy. Boil together to obtain one and a half Da Sheng, divide into two doses. If one dose brings rapid relief/diarrhea, stop taking the rest. The previous three deaths were truly fatal. But if taught this method, all survive. Fearing others might suffer similar misfortune, I transmit this. Also, Shan Jun (Shan mushroom) originates from Yi Zhou, growing on aged Shan trees, resembling fungi. It is said: Taste is bitter, nature is slightly warm. Primarily treats heart and spleen qi pain and sudden heart pain. Harvest at any time.
*Dou Men Fang*: Treats Huo Luan. Take one handful of Huang Shan Mu (Yellow Shan wood) split into slices, decoct strongly in water to make one Zhan, drink it, and recover.
*Yanyi* states: Shan has a straight trunk, generally like pine, does not shed leaves in winter, but leaves are broad forming branches. Mount Lu has Wanshan Temple, named after this Shan tree. Make into shavings, boil for juice, soak and wash swollen Hong Jiao Jiao. Now found everywhere.
