Fubi
Pungent in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Primarily treats malaria with alternating chills and fever (Malaria with alternating chills and fever), pathogenic factors, diarrhea and dysentery, impotence (Yin bu qi), stops thirst (Xiao ke), and treats headache caused by alcohol consumption (Jiu jiu tou tong). Grows in the Hanzhong region; it is actually the flower of the small bean (Xiao dou hua). Harvested in July, dried in the shade.
Tao Hongjing stated: The use of flowers differs from other parts, therefore this category cannot be grouped into the same product. Physicians rarely use it in prescriptions. Currently, one may rely on its indicated conditions for treatment, but it is unclear why it bears the name "Fubi." The *Shennong Bencao Jing* does not state it is the small bean flower; this clarification was made by later physicians. It is unknown if this is accurate. Currently, there is a small tree by the sea, resembling *Gardenia jasminoides* (Zhi zi), with many curved stems and a putrid odor. Locals call it Fubi. It is effective in treating malaria. Also, soaking the bark in wine can treat heart and abdominal pain. This is likely the true substance. If so, this entry should be placed in the Lower Grade section of the Woody Plants volume. The Tang Dynasty commentary notes: In the Shannan region, it is traditionally considered to be the flower of kudzu (Ge hua). The *Shennong Bencao Jing* states it is the small bean flower, while Tao again mentions the small tree by the sea; it is unknown which is correct. However, Ge hua eliminates alcohol effects far better than Xiao dou hua. Ge gen (Kudzu Root) also eliminates alcohol effects, whereas Xiao dou has no such efficacy. Comparing Ge hua and Xiao dou hua, Ge hua is the true one. Now, according to another version's annotation: Small bean flowers also have a putrid smell. The *Classic* mentions treating headache after drinking, which clearly indicates similar therapeutic effects. In the Ge gen entry, both its flower and the small bean flower are mentioned; taking one cun bi (a traditional measure) of the dry powder prevents intoxication after drinking. The Tang annotation mentions a small tree by the sea called Fubi by locals, which contradicts the *Classic*'s statement that small bean flower is Fubi. The two accounts differ.
*Yaoxing Lun* states: The flower of red adzuki bean (Chi xiao dou) is named Fubi. It can eliminate alcohol toxins, brighten the eyes, and dissipate qi stagnation causing abdominal fullness and inability to eat. Boil and consume as one meal. It also promotes the downward movement of water qi and treats pediatric erysipelas (Dan du) with hot swelling.
*Tujing* states: Fubi is the small bean flower. It grows in Hanzhong and is now found everywhere. Tao Hongjing believed there was a small tree by the sea resembling *Gardenia jasminoides*, with a putrid odor, called Fubi by locals, suspecting this might be it. Su Gong said: The tradition in Shannan calling it Ge hua is correct. Current annotations state: Small bean flowers also have a putrid smell associated with alcohol headaches. The small trees by the sea mainly treat malaria and heart/abdominal pain. Ge hua is not stated to treat alcohol-related illnesses. The annotation says: Mixed with small bean flower powder, take one cun bi; one will not get drunk after drinking. Thus, three substances share the name Fubi; these are different species with the same name. The *Shennong Bencao Jing* here relates to alcohol-related illnesses.
*Waitai Miyao*: Treats thirst with free urination but not strangury. Take one handful of small bean leaves (Xiao dou huo), crush to extract juice, and consume at once. *Shiyi Xinjing*: Primarily treats malaria, alternating chills and fever due to pathogenic factors, diarrhea and dysentery, insufficiency of yin qi, stops thirst, and treats headache after drinking. Boil small bean flowers with fermented soybeans (Chi dou), harmonize with five flavors, and consume as a soup. Bieshuo states: This is indeed the small bean flower. If there are other substances with the same name, follow the above description; there is no need for extensive differentiation. *Waitai Miyao*: Small bean,
