(Segment 1) Sour in flavor, non-toxic. Primarily directs Qi downward and relieves vexation and fullness. Can be prepared as a decoction for bathing; the color is yellow. Grows in Shu Commandery, harvested at the Beginning of Autumn.
Tao Hongjing states: In prescriptions and materia medica, it is no longer used; laypeople do not recognize it.
(Segment 2) Bitter in flavor, slightly cold, non-toxic. Primarily treats pain under the chest and hypochondrium, pathogenic factors, alternating cold and heat in the intestines, and Yin Bi (obstruction syndrome). Long-term consumption lightens the body, benefits Qi, and enhances longevity. Grows in the rivers and marshes of Hanzhong, harvested in May.
Tao Hongjing states: In prescriptions and materia medica, it is no longer used; laypeople do not recognize it.
(Segment 3) Bitter in flavor, cold, toxic. Primarily treats scabies ulcers, foul and deteriorating sores, eliminates three types of parasites, and expels pathogenic factors. Grows in the valleys of Yizhou. Harvested in February and August.
(Segment 4) Bitter in flavor, neutral, non-toxic. Primarily treats chronic cough with rebellious Qi, deficiency and emaciation due to middle Jiao injury, tonifies the middle and benefits Qi, treats vaginal erosion in women, leukorrhea, and red or white discharge. Also known as "Chengzhong Mu" (Tree of Hundred-Year City). Grows in the flat marshes of Jinyang.
Tao Hongjing states: In prescriptions and materia medica, it is also no longer used.
(Segment 5) Bitter in flavor, warm, non-toxic. Primarily treats pathogenic damp-bi obstruction, cold-heat du sores, resolves water retention and blood stasis, treats amenorrhea leading to infertility, inability of children to walk, various malignant sores and carbuncles, stops abdominal pain, and enables women to conceive. Also known as Tanpi (Charcoal Bark). Grows in the mountain valleys of Mount Tai. Harvested at any time.
Tao Hongjing states: It can resolve the toxicity of Wild Langdu (Radix Stellerae Chamaejasme). Li Yun says it is a parasite growing on camphor trees; the tree is large, with branches embedded in the flesh. Nowadays, people use Walnut Husk (Juglandis Fructus Pericarpium) to substitute for it, which is not the true substance growing in Shangluo. It is bark, resembling Houpo (Magnolia Officinalis Bark) in shape, with a color similar to the inner white layer of Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), and its texture features intersecting longitudinal and transverse grains. Merchants now peel it, making it look like Houpo, but lacking the correct grain pattern. It is unknown what this substance is; one cannot fathom its authenticity or identify the genuine article. Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully note: This herb promotes menstruation and primarily treats Spleen Heat. Zhuyu (Corni Fructus) serves as its guiding herb. It primarily treats water-soaked ulcers on hands and feet.
(Segment 6) Pungent in flavor, neutral, non-toxic. Primarily stops diarrhea, clears heat, harmonizes the Middle Jiao, benefits Spleen Qi, and improves complexion and spirit. Also known as Niutao, also known as Yingdou. The fruit is as large as wheat grains and hairy. Harvested in April, dried in the shade.
Tao Hongjing states: This is not the modern fruit cherry; although the shape is similar, the substance is entirely different. It occurs occasionally in mountains, and is no longer used in prescriptions and materia medica.
