Bitter, cold in nature, non-toxic. Originally grows in the ponds, marshes of Yongyang, and along riverbanks and seashores. People in Linyu call it Niuhongcao (Cow Red Plant), people in Xindu, Hebei call it Shuijie (Water Joint), people in Liannehuang, Henei call it Shuiji (Water Thorn), and people in Jinnan, Suining and other commanderies call it Longyicao (Dragon Moving Grass). People in Shujun collect its flowers to mix into facial cosmetics. It is particularly suitable for growing in various commanderies of Huainan, with thick stems and large leaves, named Haijingmu (Sea Essence Wood) or Yujincao (Fish Saliva Grass). It is found everywhere. Taken alone, it treats knee pain and other conditions. The prescription states: Shuiying (Hydrocotyle chinensis) treats men and women who inexplicably suffer from swelling and fullness in both feet, extending to pain in the knees and shins, with difficulty in flexion and extension and stiffness; this condition is named Gufeng (Bone Wind). This disease is not suitable for acupuncture and moxibustion, nor for taking herbal medicines; only by decocting this herb alone to soak the affected area can one recover in less than five days. Frequent use proves miraculous. The herb should be harvested in spring, collecting both shoots and roots. Patients suffering from the aforementioned illness should take five to six jin daily, decocted in one dan of water until three dou of liquid remain. Soak the feet while hot, and pour over the knees, three to four times day and night, using it frequently until recovery. If the swelling is severe, add three sheng of fresh Sichuan pepper seeds to the previous prescription, add two large dou of water, and decoct according to the previous method. Use the liquid to wash the sores and swelling, allowing them to dissipate with the decoction. After the swelling subsides, apply powder and avoid wind, which is the best practice. Avoid greasy food, garlic, and raw/cold foods.
