The *Tujing* states: Li Chang is Lotus Seed Grass. Old records do not specify its origin provinces, only stating it grows in damp, low-lying areas. Now it is found everywhere, especially in the South. There are two varieties here: One has leaves like willow with a glossy surface, stems like *Portulaca oleracea* (Machixian), growing about one to two chi high, with small white flowers, and fruits resembling small lotus pods. Su Gong says: This is the one whose seedlings resemble *Inula japonica*. The other variety has withered and thin stems, resembling yellow lotus flowers, with round, pod-like fruits; people in the South call it "Lianqiao". Both varieties exude juice when their seedlings are picked, which turns black shortly after; thus, they are often used for medicines to darken hair and beards, commonly known as Dry Lotus Seeds. Collect in March and August, and dry in the shade. Also called Jinling Cao. Seen in Sun Simiao's *Qianjin Yaofang · Monthly Ordinances*, stating: It nourishes beard and hair, turning white to black.
