Tao Hongjing stated: Burning rush mats is an practice unique to boatmen, resembling a sail made of rush. The mats used in ordinary households are woven from *Gong* (Cyperus rotundus) grass, while the underlays are mostly made of rush, which is occasionally utilized in medical prescriptions. The annotation in *Tang Bencao* notes that "mat" (*xi*) and "underlay" (*jian*) are essentially the same; both are used for lying down, and those that have been long occupied by humans, thereby absorbing human *Qi*, are considered superior. In the Qingzhou and Qizhou regions, rush underlays are called "rush mats" or "rush covers," referring to items used as underlays. In Shannan and Jiangzuo, items woven on looms are called "mats," while thick, heavy layers beneath them are called "underlays." As stated in the *Classic*: preference should be given to those that have been lain upon by humans for a long time, regardless of whether they are classified as underlays or mats. Ministers Yuxi et al., according to *Yaoxing Lun*, noted that ruined rush mats can also be used alone. They treat blood stasis. For injuries from falling from heights causing stabbing pain due to abdominal blood stasis, ruined rush mats that have been slept on are effective. Taken together with *Puhuang* (Pollinis Typhae), *Chishao Yao* (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), *Danggui* (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), *Dahuang* (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), and *Piaoxiao* (Natrii Sulfas), decocted and taken orally, the blood stasis will be expelled downward. Chen Cangqi stated: The cords woven into underlays treat spasms associated with Huoluan (Cholera). Burned into black ash, two finger-widths of the ash taken with wine is effective.
*Shenghui Fang*: Treats severe Huoluan with spasms nearing death. Take a handful of ruined rush mats, finely cut, and decoct in one cup of sour rice water. Drink warm in one dose.
*Waitai Miyao*: Treats abdominal blood accumulation following a fall. Take two qian of rush ash, taken with wine.
*Qianjin Fang*: Wuse Danshu (Five-Color Carbuncle), commonly known as Youzhong (Wandering Swelling), is often fatal if contracted and must not be underestimated. Burn rush mats to ash, mix with egg white, and apply topically.
*Shengjin Fang*: Treats blood rushing upward in women. Burn old ruined rush mats to ash, take two qian bi mixed with wine.
Shandougen
Flavor is sweet, nature is cold, non-toxic. It treats various drug poisonings, relieves pain, reduces carbuncles and swelling toxins, treats acute jaundice with fever and cough in humans and horses, and kills small insects. It grows in the valleys of Jiannan Mountain. Its vines resemble legumes. (Added currently)
*Tujing* states: Shandougen grows in the valleys of Jiannan Mountain; it is now also produced in Guangxi, with the best quality coming from Zhongzhou and Wanzhou. The vines resemble legumes, and the root takes its name from this. The leaves are green and do not wither through winter; the roots are harvested in August. Currently, people cut them into inch-length segments and hold them in the mouth to relieve sore throat and swelling, which is extremely effective. In Guangnan, Shandougen resembles small locust trees, over a chi high; stone rats eat their roots. Therefore, people in Lingnan capture stone rats, dissect them to extract the intestines and stomach, and dry them. It is very effective in resolving toxicity and attacking heat.
*Jingyan Fang*: A Shandougen formula for emergency treatment of all diseases: Use Shandoudougen in any quantity, treating according to the following conditions. 1.
