[Chi Che Shi Zhe (Euphorbia humifusa)]
Pungent, bitter, warm in nature, slightly toxic. Primarily treats wind-cold pathogenic factors and Zhu diseases (infectious or lingering diseases), Gu poison (poisoning from worms/venom), Zheng Jia (abdominal masses), and accumulated Qi in the five zang organs.
The Commentary of Tang Ben Cao states: The seedling resembles Xiang Ru (Elsholtzia) or Lan Xiang (Lysimachia), with red leaves and stems, and purple-red roots. It grows in the shade of valleys and streams, produced in Xiangzhou. The roots are harvested in August and September and dried in the sun. (Originally appended to previous materia medica). Minister Yu Xi et al. carefully note according to the Shu Ben Tu Jing: The root is purple like Qian Cao Gen (Rubia cordifolia root), growing in the valleys of Jingzhou and Xiangzhou, harvested in February and August. Yao Xing Lun records: Chi Che Shi Zhe has slight toxicity. It can treat severe wind-cold and cold qi; taking it makes the skin and muscles lustrous and improves complexion.
Lei Gong says: Chi Che Shi Zhe was originally named Xiao Jin Zhi. For use, it should be coarsely crushed. Mix with urine from a seven-year-old boy, steam until dry, then sun-dry. For every five liang processed, use one yi (a unit of volume) of child's urine as the standard.
Slightly toxic. Primarily treats malignant sores and scabies, and kills fish.
Tao Hongjing says: Produced in Jiaozhou and Guangzhou, it has a flat shape. When crushed and mixed with rice thrown into water, all fish, regardless of size, float up and die. Applying vinegar to rub sores is also effective. The Commentary of Tang Ben Cao states: Now called Huang Huan Zi near the capital, also known as Du Gu, or one name Jiu Ge. Tao said it comes from Jiaozhou and Guangzhou; what is now sent to the Taichang Temple from these regions is indeed Huang Huan Zi, not other substances. Current analysis of another commentary notes: Bitter, cold in nature. Vine plant, purple flowers.
[Qing Tai Yi (Roof Moss)]
Sweet, cold in nature. Primarily treats floating heat in the skin, alternating chills and fever, and promotes the Qi mechanism of the small intestine and bladder. Grows in shady places on roofs. Harvested in August and September.
Tao Hongjing says: This is green moss on tile roofs; peel it off and boil for consumption. Current analysis of another commentary notes: Non-toxic. Primarily treats childhood epilepsy-heat and epidemic febrile diseases, relieving restlessness and thirst. Minister Yu Xi et al. carefully note according to the Shu Ben Tu Jing: It is the green moss found in the north shade of old tile roofs.
[Di Jin Cao (Euphorbia humifusa)]
Pungent, non-toxic. Primarily promotes blood circulation and unblocks collaterals; can also be used to treat Qi stagnation. Grows in fields near roads; those produced in Chuzhou are particularly good. The stems and leaves are slender and weak, spreading over the ground. Stems are red, leaves are blue-purple, flourishing in summer. Red flowers bloom in June, bearing small fruits. The seedlings and seeds are collected for use. In the commentary under Luo Shi (Trachelospermum jasminoides), there is a mention of "Di Jin," which refers to vine-like plants; although sharing the same name, they belong to completely different categories. (Newly determined)
Tu Jing states: Di Jin Cao grows in Chuzhou and fields near roads. Pungent, non-toxic. Primarily promotes blood circulation and unblocks collaterals, and also treats Qi stagnation. Its seedlings and leaves are slender, creeping like vines across the ground. Stems are red, leaves are blue-red, flourishing in mid-summer. Red flowers bloom in June, bearing small fruits. Current physicians collect the seedlings and seeds for use. In the commentary of the Ben Jing under the Luo Shi entry, "Di Jin" shares the same name but is a different category.
Empirical formula for treating internal toxin causing dysentery with red and white discharge: After harvesting Di Jin Cao, wash, sun-dry, and grind into powder. Take one qian with rice broth for immediate effect.
