Lingling Xiang (Ligusticum linglingii)
Sweet in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Primarily treats malignant qi, Zhu heart-ache and abdominal fullness, and directs Qi downward. It causes the body to emit fragrance; when combined with other aromatic herbs for decoctions or pills, it is effective, especially when taken with wine. It grows in the valleys of Lingling. The leaves resemble those of Ocimum basilicum (Basil). *Nan Yue Zhi* names it Yan Cao, also known as Xun Cao, which is a fragrant herb. *Shan Hai Jing* states: Xun Cao is Lingling Xiang. (Currently appended here.)
Minister Yuxi et al., according to Chen Cangqi: Xun Cao brightens the eyes, stops tearing, treats seminal emission, dispels evil qi, and treats headache due to Cold Damage. It is also named Hui Cao, grows in damp places, is harvested in the third month, and dried in the shade. Those with detached nodes are of superior quality. Note: Xun Cao refers to the root of Hui. The leaves resemble Cannabis sativa (Hemp) leaves, arranged oppositely; this is Lingling Xiang. Ri Huazi states: It treats abdominal distension due to blood and Qi stagnation; the stems and leaves are decocted in wine for administration.
*Tu Jing* states: Lingling Xiang grows in the valleys of Lingling and is now found in various prefectures of Huling, mostly in damp areas. The leaves resemble Hemp leaves, arranged oppositely; the stem is square; the aroma resembles Glehnia littoralis (Miwu); it flowers in mid-July and becomes highly fragrant upon maturity; this is the Xun Cao mentioned by ancients. Some call it Hui Cao, which is the same. Furthermore, its stems and leaves are called Hui, while its root is called Xun. Harvested in the third month, those with detached nodes are superior. Currently, Lingnan collects it, baking it dry over charcoal pits until yellow, which is ideal. There are also locally grown varieties in the Jianghuai region, usable for incense, but not as fragrant as those from Huling. Ancient prescriptions used only Xun Cao, not Lingling Xiang. Currently, perfumers, as well as methods for face powders and tooth powders, all use it; it is widely sold in markets in the capital.
*Tang Ben Zhu* states: Grows near water in mountains; can be combined with other aromatics; decocting the juice for drinking is also suitable. Used as an incipient in clothing. *Hai Yao* states: According to *Shan Hai Jing*, it grows in the southern valleys of Guang. Mr. Chen states: The place name is Lingling, hence named after the location. Pungent in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. Primarily treats Wind-Evil rushing to the heart, swelling and pain of the jaw, deficiency consumption, and childhood malnutrition (Gan accumulation). For any toothache, decocting and holding in the mouth is beneficial. Combined with Cimicifuga racemosa (Shengma) and Asarum heterotropoides (Xixin), it is particularly effective. It should not be taken in large amounts, as it may cause asthma.
*Yan Yi* states: Lingling Xiang remains fragrant even when completely dried, making it excellent for medicinal use. Women soak it in oil to adorn their hair; no fragrance surpasses it. This is indeed Hui Cao.
