[Meishi (Plum Fruit)]
Taste: Sour. Nature: Neutral. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Mainly directs qi downward, eliminates heat, irritability, and fullness, calms the mind, relieves limb pain, treats hemiplegia, numbness, dead flesh, removes blue-black moles, treats malignant diseases, stops dysentery, reduces excessive salivation, and relieves dry mouth. Grows in the valleys of Hanzhong. Harvested in May, dried by fire.
Tao Hongjing states: This is also the current Wumei (Smoked Plum). When used, remove the pit and lightly roast it. For heat and irritability due to Cold Damage (Shanghan), soak in water and drink the juice. Raw plums and Bai Mei (White Plum) should be... similar. Nowadays, people often use Bai Mei mixed with medicine to apply on moles and cauterize malignant flesh. Those consuming Huangjing (Polygonatum Rhizome) are said to be forbidden from eating Meishi. Tang Benzhu states: "Bielu" says, Meigen (Plum Root) treats wind-bi; those dug out of the earth kill people. Meishi benefits sinews and vessels, removes bi-syndrome. Chen Yuxi et al. respectfully note according to "Yaoxing Lun": Mehe Ren (Plum Pit Kernel) can also be used alone, sour taste, non-toxic. Can eliminate irritability and heat. Xiao Bing states: Nowadays, people mostly smoke them to make Wumei. Meng Shen states: Wumei, excessive consumption damages teeth. Additionally, if a thorn is embedded in the flesh, chew Bai Mei and seal the wound, the thorn will come out. Additionally, for constipation with qi rushing causing a sensation of death, place ten Wumei in soup, after a moment remove the pits, pound into pills the size of dates, insert into the anus, and passage will occur shortly. Respectfully note: Split and soak in water, mix with a little honey to stop thirst, treat Huoluan (Cholera-like disorder) with abdominal discomfort and bloody dysentery. Prescription for Malaria: Used frequently. Chen Cangqi states: Besides its original functions, Meishi stops thirst. But it causes heat above the diaphragm. Wumei resolves phlegm, treats malaria and miasma, stops thirst, regulates the middle, removes cold-heat dysentery, stops vomiting and reflux. Crushed Plum Leaves (Mei Ye) washed with decoction, clothes become easy to shed. Songyangzi states: Rubbing Mei Ye with clear water to wash Jiaoge clothing prevents brittleness even in summer. I have tested it and verified its efficacy. Rihuazi states: Meizi (Plum fruit) is warm. Stops thirst. Excessive eating damages bones, corrodes spleen and stomach, causes fever. Decoction of roots and leaves treats Xixi Li (Persistent Dysentery) and Huoluan. Also states Bai Mei is warm, non-toxic. Treats knife and arrow wounds, stops bleeding, grinds and applies. Also states Wumei is warm, non-toxic. Removes labor/damage, treats bone-steaming fever, removes irritability. Astringes intestines and stops dysentery, resolves alcohol toxicity. Treats hemiplegia and skin paralysis. Removes black spots. Promotes sleep. Combined with Jian Tea and Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) into pills, effectively stops persistent dysentery.
"Tujing" states: Meishi grows in the valleys of Hanzhong, but is now found in Xianghan, Chuanshu, Jianghu, and Huailing. Its fruit is sour, damages teeth, harms bones, induces deficiency heat, and should not be eaten in excess; especially unsuitable for those consuming Huangjing. Decoction of its leaves treats persistent dysentery. Roots treat wind-bi. Dug-out roots are unusable. In May, harvest yellow fruits, smoke-dry to make Wumei. Treats heat and irritability from Shanghan and restlessness/thirst from Huoluan. Prescriptions for deficiency-labor, emaciation, and postpartum qi-dysentery: frequently used. Southern region: For treating labor-malaria in the weak, use fourteen Wumei, two he of Douchi (Fermented Soybeans), one tiger-mouth grasp each of Tao Zhi (Peach Twig) and Liu Zhi (Willow Twig), three cun long Gancao (Licorice Root), one piece of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), decoct in two sheng of Tongzi Xiaon (Child's Urine) to seven he, take warm. Other medicinal uses are numerous. Salt-treated Bai Mei is also used in phlegm-resolving medicines. Additionally, there is Yangmei (Bayberry), also growing in Jiangnan and Lingnan. The tree resembles Lychee, with fine dense leaves, fruit green when raw and red when ripe, flesh on the pit, no skin/shell. Southerners pickle and store as fruit, send north: very many. Current medical prescriptions rarely use fresh ones, so attached here.
"Shenghui Fang": Treats Shanghan with sores in the lower part. Use three liang of Wumei meat, stir-fry until dry, pound into powder, refine honey into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Boil... to seven... extract... make... extremely hot, insert small... five sheng of water, cold. With thirty... as cutting finger. With Wu... crush, two sheng of water, boil... gradually self-dissolve. Experience Prescription:... only purple blood comes out, red blood comes out, chest irritability and pain. Fourteen Wumei... with two liang of Wumei meat, lightly stir-fry... filter dregs, take before sleep. Ghost... Shi Bencao: Mehe brightens eyes,... soldiers lost way, great thirst without water...
"Yanyi" states: Meishi, eating plums causes secretion of fluids, water generates wood. Fluid secretion, thus damages teeth. Kidney belongs to water, externally manifests as teeth, hence this. Wang Shuhe says: Bladder and Kidney combine to form the residence of fluids. Although this language is vulgar, the principle exists. Smoked to become Wumei, sun-dried and stored in tight vessels, becomes Bai Mei.
