Su Gong's annotation states: It resembles the clam-snipe. According to investigation, the snipe (Yu) is like a quail, with a long beak and grayish color, making "yu-yu" sounds among the mud. People catch it for food; its taste is no different from a quail, with no other special efficacy. Su Gong also said: This refers to the struggle between the clam and the snipe. New annotations state: It can be used to tonify deficiency and is very warming. Villagers say: It is transformed from a frog and is of the same category as the quail.
Tao Hongjing's annotation on [Bird Name Missing]: Sparrow, [Missing], cicada, fan. Investigation shows that [Missing] is a small bird, similar to a quail, also named [Missing]. Zheng Xuan's annotation on the *Book of Rites* (*Liji*) states: Using [Missing] as [Missing]. It also says: [Missing] is the mother of [Missing]. The *Zhuangzi* states: The marsh [Missing]; people eat it, with no distinct efficacy.
Tao Hongjing's annotation on Stork (*Guan*): Yangwu is the stork. Investigation shows these two are quite dissimilar; Yangwu has a black body, a long white neck, and a small beak resembling a stork's. It mainly treats sores caused by venomous insect bites. Burn it into powder and take with wine. It is also called Yangya. Produced in Jianzhou.
Pungent in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Mainly treats exhaustion, blood accumulation, promotes blood circulation, and calms the spirit. *Yi Zhi* states: Treats fright evil, epilepsy, chicken epilepsy, fever with manic running. Grind with water and take. This is an object under the Phoenix's foot, resembling white stone. Although the Phoenix is a spiritual bird that occasionally descends, if one waits at its roosting place and digs two or three feet into the earth, it can be obtained. It resembles a round stone, white as an egg. However, the Phoenix does not roost unless on a parasol tree (*Wutong*) nor eat unless on bamboo seeds. It is unknown why its roosting place would be near the ground and buried in soil; this is indeed the natural principle of things, which is unfathomable. Currently, places where Phoenixes exist may not have bamboo; places with bamboo may not have Phoenixes. It is likely found only in the Qilin Fengzhou (Qilin and Phoenix Continent) of various nations. Just as the String-Repairing Glue presented during the Han Dynasty was made by boiling Phoenix marrow. If such things exist, what is there to marvel at? Now, chickens also have white "Tai," hard like an egg, containing white substance but no yolk, said to be laid by male chickens, named Father Gong Tai. In the *Ben Jing*, the term "Chicken White Tuo" appears; the character "Tuo" resembles "Tai," which is a copying error by later generations. *Shu Ji* states: People in various heavenly kingdoms eat Phoenix eggs, just as people here eat chicken eggs.
Mainly treats stream poison, sand louse, water弩 (water弩), archer bug, short-fox shrimp whisker, and other diseases. Bring the bird near the patient; it will attract the pathogenic factor from the human body. Afterward, use a vessel to catch it, and sand/stones should emerge. This sand is what the bug uses to shoot at people; the sand is the bug's arrow. One can also burn its feces and feathers into ash and ingest them. Alternatively, keep it in a cage near the person to allow the bird's qi to attract the pathogen. These birds grow in areas with water poison in mountains, likely due to consuming toxic insects. The aforementioned diseases are roughly similar, all caused by insects in mountains and rivers that shoot sand/shadows. There are also cases without water; prevention is necessary. Upon onset, massage the body frequently at night. Wherever a burning pain is felt, look closely; there should be red spots like needle heads. Quickly pinch them, scrape with taro leaves inserted into the flesh, and fine sand/stones will appear. Apply garlic paste to the wound. Otherwise, chills and fever will soon occur, and the wound will deepen. Shrimp whisker sores are particularly common in Guiling; only one or two out of ten survive. Only those who detect it early should use taro grass, large taro, sugarcane leaves, etc., bent into hooks to dig out the root deep into the flesh until the root end is reached. Seal with garlic, and it will heal. Within moments, the root penetrates to the bone. Pulling out the root resembles a shrimp whisker; this sore is called Shrimp Whisker Sore, resembling a carbuncle. It is most malignant when located in hidden parts of the body. The other six diseases may present like malaria or the initial chills and fever of epidemic febrile diseases. Some have sores, some do not. The key is to expel the sand/stones. Delayed treatment is easier than for Shrimp Whisker Sore. [Missing Bird], resembles a duck but larger, with red eyes and spotted beak, fond of living in mountain streams.
