[Stork Bone]
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Non-toxic. Indications: Governs ghost-gu (parasitic infestations) and various zhu-poison (chronic infectious diseases), and heart/abdominal disorders caused by the Five Corpses (Wushi).
Tao Hongjing stated: There are two types of storks: those resembling swans that nest in trees are White Storks; those with curved necks and black plumage are Black Storks. Currently, the white variety is preferred. According to Chen Cangqi's Materia Medica: The foot bones and beak of the stork treat throat obstruction (Houbi), Flying Corpse (Feishi - a sudden onset disease), snake and viper bites, as well as children's Shanpi (abdominal masses or convulsions), and abdominal fullness/distension. These are treated by boiling into a decoction for oral administration, or by burning to black ash and ingesting. It has slight toxicity. It can kill trees and cause hair loss; adding a small amount to bath water causes all hair to fall out and prevents regrowth. If humans probe nests to take stork chicks, drought will occur within sixty li; the flock can fly and stir up clouds to dissipate rain. When resting in their nests, they build pools with mud, fill them with water carried in their mouths, raise fish and snakes, and feed these to their young. Minister Yuxi et al., according to *Materia Medica of Drug Properties*: Stork bone is extremely cold in nature. It can be used alone to treat Corpse Zhu, Ghost Zhu, and abdominal pain. It should be roasted until yellow, ground into powder, and taken on an empty stomach with warm wine, one Fangcunbi (a traditional measure).
*Yanyi* states: The true stork has no red patch on its head, no black collar on its neck, and a body like a crane. It does not cry loudly but makes sounds by clacking its beak. The story about building pools to raise fish and snakes for feeding young cannot be verified for posterity. This bird often nests in the tiles and soil of pavilion eaves, observed daily by people, thus revealing such accounts as inaccurate. It is also recorded under the entry for Stone Strip.
[White Pigeon]
Taste: Salty. Nature: Neutral. Toxicity: Non-toxic.
Meat: Treats poisoning from various drugs, and long-standing scabies in humans and horses.
Feces: Treats horse scabies (also noted as dog scabies). Pigeons and doves gather among houses. Humans suffering from scabies who consume them recover immediately. For horses with scabies affecting the mane and tail, collect pigeon feces, roast until yellow, grind into powder, and mix with fodder for feeding. It is also said: Bobwhite pigeons are warm in nature and non-toxic. They regulate essence and qi, treat malignant sores, scabies, wind-pruritus (skin itching), and resolve all drug poisonings. Although beneficial for patients to eat, excessive consumption may reduce medicinal efficacy. Vitiligo and Yangfeng (leprosy-like skin disease): Roast and take with wine. Also applicable for applying to scabies sores on donkeys and horses. (Newly supplemented)
*Shenghui Fang*: Treats extreme scalp itching without pain, accompanied by sores. Use five he of white pigeon feces, mix with good vinegar to form a thin paste, boil for two or three boils, and apply three times daily. Another prescription: Treats white tinea capitis (baldness with scaling). Grind feces finely, sieve into powder, wash the head first with vinegar and rice water, then apply; cure is immediate. *Waitai Miyao* emergency treatment for gu poison: Burn white pigeon feathers and feces to ash, mix with drink and ingest. *Shiyi Xinjing* treats Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst syndrome) with unquenchable thirst. Take one white flowered pigeon, cut into small pieces, decoct with Tusu (Perilla), hold in mouth and swallow the juice.
*Yanyi* states: Among birds, white pigeons have the most diverse plumage colors. Prescription: One qian of wild pigeon feces, roasted slightly scorched; one fen each of Moschus (Shexiang) separately ground and Wu Baizhu (Atractylodes); half liang each of Chishao Yao (Red Peony Root) and Qingmuxiang (Aucklandia); three fen of Chai Hu (Bupleurum); one liang of Yanhusuo (Corydalis), roasted and peeled. Grind these seven substances into powder. Mix with clear wine and take one qian on an empty stomach to treat leukorrhea and expel pus. Stop subsequent doses once pus is exhausted, and continue treating with other herbs to tonify the blood organs.
