When milk flows spontaneously from the breasts during pregnancy, it is called Ruqi (Breast Weeping). Excessive flow may suggest difficulty in nurturing the child after birth, due to insufficient internal Blood to nourish the Fetus. This indicates Qi and Blood deficiency failing to control and contain. Taking more Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction) to assist Blood generation allows the Fetus to develop properly. This demonstrates the medical principle of assisting gestation.
(Bazhen Tang [Eight Treasure Decoction], see previous section on Tai Lou [Fetal Leakage])
If a woman’s menstruation stops for six or seven months, whereas it was previously regular, and she has no other illness but her abdomen does not enlarge, and her pulse is slightly slippery but not vigorous, this indicates Taibuchang (Poor Fetal Growth). Consequently, delivery may occur at twelve or thirteen months. This is because the mother’s Qi and Blood are weak. The treatment method should be to boost Qi and Blood, and tonify the Spleen and Stomach, so that the Fetus grows, the abdomen enlarges, and delivery occurs. To tonify the Spleen, use Wuwei Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Extraordinary Merit Powder); to cultivate Blood, use Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction). If there are other diseases, modify according to symptoms. *Jiyan Fang* (Collected Effective Prescriptions) suggests using a carp about one chi long, boiling it, eating the meat, and drinking the broth, which promotes fetal growth. *Zhangfang* (Handbook of Indications) uses Huangqi Tang (Astragalus Decoction) and Baizhu Wan (Atractylodes Macrocephala Pill), both of which promote fetal growth by tonifying the Spleen and Stomach and supplementing the Chong and Ren vessels.
