(Pregnant women experiencing vomiting is termed "E Zu" (Morning Sickness/Nausea of Pregnancy), here it does not refer to the obstruction of menstruation.)
During pregnancy, menstruation ceases. Turbid Qi stagnates and ascends to invade the clear orifices/channels, or phlegm-fluids accumulate in the Zhongwan region, causing fullness and oppression in the chest and diaphragm, dizziness, vomiting, fatigue, weakness, and loss of appetite;
Sometimes one suddenly feels as if suffering from a severe illness, while at other times, after a period of time, there are no symptoms at all; this is what is referred to as pregnant women often having strange ailments, which are actually not true diseases, but are named "E Zu". The prescription used is Er Chen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) with added fried Zhi Qiao (Bitter Orange Fruit) and crushed Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit) with shells removed, to stabilize the Stomach Qi and resolve phlegm. If there is Spleen Qi deficiency, Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) is used with added Zi Su Geng (Perilla Stem) (5 fen), fried Zhi Qiao (5 fen), fried Sha Ren (5 fen), and Xiang Fu (Cyperus Rhizome) (8 fen), decocted with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Da Zao (Jujube). The Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) must be washed three times using ginger water. It is more stable when used together with Ren Shen (Ginseng Root). Although E Zu symptoms are common, frequent vomiting and inability to eat cause Qi to rebel upwards; rebellion may lead to rushing and disturbing the Pericardium, harming the pregnant woman, so it is urgent to calm the fetus and regulate the Stomach.
Er Chen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction)
Zhi Ban Xia (Prepared Pinellia Tuber) (1 qian, soaked) Guang Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel) (7 fen) Bai Fu Ling (Poria) (1.2 qian) Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) (5 fen) Adding Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) (8 fen) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) (1 qian) to this formula constitutes Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction). All should be decocted with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Da Zao (Jujube).
The causes of fetal movement instability vary: they may result from anger stirring Liver Fire, careless daily living, falls or impacts, or sexual activity disturbing the body, leading to fetal insecurity. Pregnant women may experience lower back pain, fever, anorexia, and insomnia. The main prescription for treatment is An Tai Yin (Fetus-Calming Decoction), with modifications according to specific conditions. If the instability is severe, fearing internal fetal damage, one must examine the tongue and correlate it with the facial complexion. If the face is red and the tongue is blue/green, it indicates the fetus has been damaged. If the face is blue/green and the tongue is red, the mother is injured but the fetus survives. If both face and tongue are red, neither is harmed. If both face and tongue are blue/green, both lives are lost. If the parturient woman spits white foam and her lips and mouth appear blue/green, death is imminent and cannot be saved. During pregnancy, careful nurturing is essential.
An Tai Yin (Fetus-Calming Decoction)
Da Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) (3 qian) Dang Gui Shen (Dang Gui Body) (1 qian) Bai Shao (White Peony Root) (1 qian, wine-fried) Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) (5 fen) Ai Ye (Mugwort Leaf) (5 fen) Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit) (5 fen, crushed) Bai Fu Ling (Poria) (1.5 qian) Chuan Xiong (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome) (3 fen) Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) (1 qian, earth-fried) E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) (1 qian)
Decoct with water and take orally.
Fetal movement instability can be due to cold, heat, deficiency, or excess; how can one generally resort to warming and tonifying methods? (Comment by Xu)
If caused by careless living or sexual disturbance, add Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) (1 qian), Du Zhong (Eucommia Bark) (2 qian), Chuan Duan (Teasel Root) (1 qian), Sang Ji Sheng (Taxillus Branch) (2 qian), preferably authentic products.
If unable to use Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), add Mi Zhi Huang Qi (Honey-fried Astragalus Root) (3 qian). If caused by anger stirring Liver Fire, add Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root) (3 fen) and Hei Zhi Zi (Black Gardenia Fruit) (8 fen) to the base formula. If due to Spleen deficiency and Qi stagnation, remove Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), and add Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) (5 fen), Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel) (5 fen), and Chao Bai Bian Dou (Fried White Hyacinth Bean) (2 qian). If due to trauma from falls, separately use Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) (1.5 qian), Chuan Xiong (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome) (5 fen), Qing Mu Xiang (Vladimiria Root) (1 qian), and Sang Ji Sheng (Taxillus Branch) (2-3 qian) (This herb is extremely effective for calming the fetus, most excellent, though authenticity is a concern). If affected by wind-cold pathogenic factors, dispel them according to the respective meridians. For mild cases, remove Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) from the base formula and add 1 qian of Su Geng (Perilla Stem); this herb can broaden fetal Qi, relieve distension, and calm the fetus. Alternatively, add 3 qian of Qing Zhu Ma Gen (Green Ramie Root). Generally, various symptoms of Zi Fan (Pregnancy-related mental restlessness/irritability) can be included. For those with Qi deficiency causing fetal sinking, separately use Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) to lift and support the fetal origin, thereby stabilizing the fetus. Generally, for individuals with weak constitutions, Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) should be added to An Tai Yin (Fetus-Calming Decoction), effectively forming Jiao Ai Ba Zhen Tang (Gelatin and Mugwort Eight-Treasures Decoction).
Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction)
Mi Zhi Huang Qi (Honey-fried Astragalus Root) (2 qian) Yu Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) (1 qian, earth-fried) Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel) (5 fen) Dang Gui Shen (Dang Gui Body) (1 qian) Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root) (3 fen, honey-fried) Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome) (3 fen, honey-fried) Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) (5 fen)
Decoct with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Da Zao (Jujube) and take orally.
Bao Tai Wan (Fetus-Preserving Pill)
This is based on Mr. Jia'an's Tuo Tai Wan (Fetus-Supporting Pill). I added Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) to form the sovereign, minister, assistant, and courier roles of four ingredients, naming it Bao Tai Wan (Fetus-Preserving Pill). It is highly effective, also known as the Qian Jin Bao Yun Fang (Thousand Gold Pregnancy-Preserving Formula).
Du Zhong (Eucommia Bark) (8 liang, mixed with glutinous rice porridge soup, steamed, dried, and fried) Shan Yao (Chinese Yam Rhizome) (6 liang, fried, ground separately, keeping 2 liang of powder to make paste for pills) Chuan Duan (Teasel Root) (4 liang, salt-water fried) Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) (2 liang, wine-fried)
Use the Shan Yao (Chinese Yam Rhizome) powder to make paste for pills. Some use jujube flesh to make paste for pills. Take 4 qian with warm water at any time. Any pregnant woman can take this. Stop taking it after seven full months. This formula uses inexpensive materials but yields great results, preventing miscarriage permanently. Moreover, postpartum breast diseases are common; this formula is suitable for the poor to spread and take, as it is cheap and economical. Even if exposed to external pathogens, do not discontinue. If signs of miscarriage appear, disseminate this formula immediately; its efficacy is miraculous.
