Huo Luan (acute vomiting and diarrhea syndrome) is caused by the body's inability to adjust properly to temperature changes, leading to interference and disorder between Yin and Yang Qi and Clear and Turbid Qi. When this disorder occurs in the intestines and stomach, it is triggered by dietary intake, resulting in severe cramping pain in the heart and abdomen. If heart pain appears first, vomiting occurs first; if abdominal pain appears first, diarrhea occurs first; if both heart and abdominal pain occur simultaneously, vomiting and diarrhea happen together. Those with excess patterns complicated by Wind may experience fever, headache, body aches, accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea; those with deficiency patterns present only with vomiting and diarrhea, along with stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen. There are also cases caused by excessive consumption of alcohol, meat, raw or cold foods, combined with irregular living habits, such as sleeping exposed on damp ground or cooling off in front of drafts. This allows Wind-Cold Qi to enter the San Jiao (Triple Burner), transmitting to the Spleen and Stomach. The Spleen and Stomach, affected by Cold, lose their ability to transform and transport; consequently, food and fluids fail to digest. This also causes Clear and Turbid Qi to interfere with each other. With Spleen and Stomach Qi deficiency, vomiting and diarrhea ensue, undigested food leads to fullness and distension in the heart and abdomen, all constituting Huo Luan.
Huo Luan has three names: one is Wei Fan (Stomach Reversal), referring to the deficiency and rebellious nature of Stomach Qi causing food to be vomited up; two is Huo Luan, describing how the disease strikes suddenly and causes chaos; three is Zou Bu (Wandering Nourishment), indicating that eating leads to rebellion and reversal.
Upon pulse diagnosis, the appearance of Dai Mai (Intermittent Pulse) indicates Huo Luan; similarly, a Dai Mai that is faint and nearly absent also indicates Huo Luan. In Huo Luan, a large pulse suggests the condition is treatable, whereas a fine and faint pulse indicates it is untreatable. In Huo Luan with vomiting and purging, if the pulse is faint and slow, breath is weak, and there is no desire to speak, the condition is untreatable.
The *Yang Sheng Fang* (Prescriptions for Nurturing Life) states: Consuming honey in the seventh month can cause sudden diarrhea and trigger Huo Luan.
Disorder between Cold and Heat, and irregular diet, cause the Clear and Turbid Qi of the body to interfere with each other and become chaotic within the intestines and stomach, resulting in Huo Luan. When Huo Luan is accompanied by heart and abdominal pain, it is due to Wind-Evil lodging between the Zang and Fu organs, where Cold Qi clashes with True Qi. If it attacks upward to the Heart, or downward to the Abdomen, heart and abdominal pain result.
Disorder between Cold and Heat, and irregular diet, cause the Clear and Turbid Qi of the body to interfere with each other and become chaotic within the intestines and stomach, resulting in Huo Luan. When Huo Luan is accompanied by vomiting, it is because Cold Qi lodges between the Zang and Fu organs. If it attacks upward to the Heart, heart pain occurs; if it attacks downward to the Abdomen, abdominal pain occurs. If heart pain appears first, vomiting occurs first; if abdominal pain appears first, diarrhea occurs first. This specific type of vomiting is caused by Cold entering the Stomach, disrupting Stomach Qi. As Cold Evil becomes prevalent and Grain Qi fails to harmonize, Stomach Qi rebels upward, causing vomiting.
