Mania (Kuang Bing) is caused by wind-pathogen invading and merging with the Yang aspect. When wind-pathogen enters the blood vessels, it causes an imbalance in the deficiency and excess of Yin and Yang Qi in the body. If one is excess and the other deficiency, Blood and Qi will contend with each other. When Qi merges excessively into the Yang aspect, mania erupts, manifesting as a desire to run away, or believing oneself to be noble and virtuous, claiming to be divine and sacred. Furthermore, the Liver stores the Hun (Ethereal Soul). Sorrow and grief disturbing the interior damage the Hun; when the Hun is damaged, one becomes manic, forgetful, and lacks mental clarity, dares not look directly at others, experiences retraction of the genitals and contraction of tendons, and has immobility of the costal bones. The hair becomes brittle and the complexion dull, leading to death in autumn. All these are caused by deficiency of Blood and Qi, exposure to wind-pathogen, resulting in the contention of Yin and Yang Qi, hence named Wind-Mania (Feng Kuang).
Wind-pathogen refers to the pathogenic influence of Wind-Qi injuring the human body. In humans, the internal Blood and Qi constitute the Righteous Qi (Zheng Qi), while external Wind constitutes the Pathogen. If living conditions are inappropriate and diet is unregulated, causing internal damage to the Zang-Fu organs and exterior deficiency of Blood and Qi, one becomes injured by wind-pathogen. Thus, there are five types of pathogenic factors: first, Wind-Stroke (Zhong Feng); second, Summerheat Injury (Shang Shu); third, Diet and Overwork (Yin Shi Lao Juan); fourth, Cold Stroke (Zhong Han); fifth, Dampness Stroke (Zhong Shi). Their pathological manifestations differ.
When wind-pathogen attacks, the patient loses self-awareness, becoming manic, confused, speaking delusionally, and exhibiting boundless sorrow or joy. Decoctions, moxibustion/warming therapies (Tang Wu), acupuncture, and stone therapy have separate specific prescriptions for treatment. Nourishing health and Daoyin (guiding and pulling) methods are attached below.
The *Yangsheng Fang* (Prescriptions for Health Preservation) · *Daoyin Fa* (Guiding and Pulling Methods) states: The Spleen governs Earth; Earth is warm like human flesh, which facilitates sweating to expel wind-cold pathogenic factors. If there is abdominal Qi distension, one must first warm the feet, massage above and below the umbilicus and the Qihai (CV6) acupoint, without limiting the number of repetitions, more being better. If the Qi can be rotated left and right, perform this twenty-one times (3 × 7). Harmonizing the Qi according to proper usage requires employing one hundred and thirteen methods within the body, rotating through three hundred and sixty bone joints, shaking arteries and tendons, so that Blood and Qi spread and moisten, the twenty-four Qi harmonize and nourish, and the Zang-Fu organs are evenly regulated. The application of harmonizing Qi involves moving, turning, shaking, and vibrating the head; directing Hand-Qi upward, while Heart-Qi moves downward, clearly knowing the departure and arrival of Qi. It does not matter whether hands are held flat or hips are leaned on, or whether turning the body or massaging Qi; upon completion of flexion, extension, and rotation, release the Heart-Qi and send it down to the Yongquan (KI1) acupoint. Do not deviate from the pathway of Qi flow; using these methods yields benefits. Those who do not understand how to use them may fear causing Qi chaos.
