The Hand-Shaoyin (Heart) Meridian originates within the heart, connects to the Xinxi (Heart System, tissues connecting the heart to other organs), descends through the diaphragm, and interrelates with the Small Intestine. The Xinxi has two parts: one part connects upward with the lungs and enters between the two lobes of the lungs; the other part descends from the lung system, curves backward, and is connected via fine collaterals along the spinal cord, communicating with the kidneys, located precisely at the level of the seventh vertebral segment. This is because the systems of the five zang organs all connect to the heart, and the heart connects to the systems of the five zang organs. Its branch arises from the Xinxi, runs alongside the pharynx, and connects to the eyes. The main trunk again emerges from the Xinxi, ascends into the lungs, and then exits from the axilla (boundary of the Jiquan [LI1] acupoint). It descends along the posterior medial aspect of the upper arm, running posterior to the Hand-Taiyin (Lung) and Hand-Jueyin (Pericardium) meridians, reaching the medial border of the elbow (boundary of the Shaohai [HT3] acupoint). It follows the posterior medial aspect of the forearm, reaches the end of the pisiform bone (Duigu, also known as the ulnar styloid process) at the back of the palm, enters the posterior medial aspect of the palm, follows the medial side of the little finger, and exits at its tip (the pisiform bone is called Duigu).
The Hand-Taiyang (Small Intestine) Meridian originates at the tip of the little finger, follows the ulnar side of the hand, ascends to the wrist, and emerges from the malleolus of the wrist (the end of the arm bones is called the wrist, and the pisiform bone at the wrist is called the malleolus). It goes straight up along the lower medial border of the forearm bone, emerges from the medial side of the elbow between two tendons, ascends along the lower lateral border of the upper arm, emerges from the shoulder joint gap (the muscles on both sides of the spine are called Lü, the two angles above Lü are called Jianjie, and the flat bone below Jianjie is called Jianbi, where Bi is a variant of Jia), enters the Supraclavicular Fossa (Quepen), interrelates with the heart, follows the pharynx, descends through the diaphragm, reaches the stomach, and belongs to the Small Intestine. Its branch arises from the Quepen, follows the neck, ascends to the cheek, reaches the outer canthus (the outer corner of the eye is called Ruizi), and then enters the ear (the outer corner is called Ruizi). Another branch separates from the cheek, ascends to the zygomatic arch, reaches the nose, and extends to the inner canthus (the area under the eye, the large angle of the eye is called Neijingming, boundary of the Jingming [BL1] acupoint, to intersect with the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian).
The Foot-Taiyang (Bladder) Meridian originates at the inner canthus (Neijingming), ascends to the forehead, and intersects at the vertex (the area before the hairline is called E, and above the brain is called Dianding). Its branch arises from the vertex, ascends to the upper angle of the ear (this is at the boundary of the Shuaigu [GB8] acupoint, located three fen above the ear, entering the hairline by one cun and five fen, in a depression). The main trunk enters from the vertex, interrelates with the brain, then emerges, branches off, and descends to the nape (the brain is the marrow of the head, the upper neck is called Nao, and the back of the neck is called Xiang; this corresponds to the Tianzhu [BL10] acupoint, outside the large tendon of the neck, in the depression flanking the hairline of the neck). It follows the medial aspect of the scapula, flanks the spine, reaches the middle of the waist, descends deeply into the Lü muscle, interrelates with the kidneys, and belongs to the Bladder (the lower part behind the shoulder is called Jianbo, the vertebrae are called Ji, the transverse bone above the coccyx is called Yao, and the muscle flanking the spine is called Lü). Its branch descends from the middle of the waist, penetrates the buttocks, and enters the popliteal fossa (the buttocks and coccyx are collectively called Tun; the areas beside the hip bones are called Ji; behind Ji is the buttock; the area above the calf and behind the knee bend is called Guo, corresponding to the Weizhong [BL40] acupoint). Another branch separates from the medial aspect of the scapula, descends bilaterally, penetrates the Shen muscle (Lü muscle is called Shen, muscle flanking the spine), passes through the Bitu (lateral thigh is called Bi, below the fibular head is Bitu), follows the posterior lateral border of the thigh, converges with the previous branch in the popliteal fossa, descends through the calf (Gastrocnemius, also called Chuan), emerges posterior to the lateral malleolus, follows the Jinggu [BL64] acupoint, and reaches the lateral tip of the little toe (corresponding to the Zhiyin [BL67] acupoint, intersecting with the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian; the gastrocnemius is also called Shuan).
