Bombyx Batryticatus (Jiangcan), Scorpio (Quanxie), Typhonii Rhizoma (Baifu), Ramulus Cinnamomi (Guizhi), Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma (Shengjiang), Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Congbai), Agastachis Herba (Huoxiang), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Gentianae Macrophytae Radix (Qinjiao), Arctii Fructus (Niubangzi), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Peucedani Radix (Qianhu), Nardostachyos Radix et Rhizoma (Gansong), Artemisiae Argyi Folium (Aiye).
These herbs generally constitute an excellent formula for dispelling wind, scattering cold, removing bi-syndrome (obstruction), and eliminating dampness. Patients suffering from these various symptoms should treat according to the indications of the Six Channels (Taiyang, Yangming, Shaoyang, Taiyin, Shaoyin, Jueyin) as described in Materia Medica, and the disease can be cured. However, this is only suitable for conditions belonging to the Yang channels. If it is a stroke affecting the True Zang organs, or cold invading the Yin channels, or bone atrophy resembling bi-syndrome, where Yang is deficient and Yin is excessive, and water-dampness resembles damp-evil, misusing these agents will already deplete the Ying (Nutritive) Qi and cause Wei (Defensive) Qi to leak; the True Qi will perish with it, so why wait for death? Therefore, for those who have been ill for a long time, Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Congbai) and Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma (Shengjiang) are also contraindicated. As for such pungent, dispersing, and qi-consuming preparations, one dare not administer them lightly.
(Colloquially known as Pogu Zhi)
Materia Medica states that it treats the five labors and seven injuries, wind-deficiency cold pain, damage and degeneration of bone marrow, cold kidney with seminal emission, and uterine bleeding leading to miscarriage in women; it also promotes sexual function, clarifies the eyes and ears.
Li Shizhen (Binhu) says: It treats kidney diarrhea, unblocks the Mingmen (Gate of Life), warms the Dantian, and consolidates the spirit. According to Bai Feixia's *Fangwai Qifang*: Psoraleae Fructus (Buguzhi) belongs to Fire and consolidates the spirit, allowing the Fire of the Pericardium to communicate with the Fire of the Mingmen. Thus, the Yuan (Original) Yang becomes firm, and the bone marrow becomes full; its astringent nature treats leakage. Walnut (Hetao) belongs to Wood, moistens dryness, and nourishes blood. Blood belongs to Yin and dislikes dryness, so oil is used to moisten it. Assisting Buguzhi, Walnut has the subtle effect of Wood generating Fire. Scholar Xu cites Sun Simiao saying, "Tonifying the Kidney is not as good as tonifying the Spleen." I say, "Tonifying the Spleen is not as good as tonifying the Kidney." When Kidney Qi is weak, Yang Qi becomes deficient and poor, unable to steam and warm the Spleen and Stomach. This causes Qi stagnation in the Spleen and Stomach, leading to chest and diaphragm stuffiness, loss of appetite, slow transformation and transportation, or false distension in the abdomen and hypochondrium, vomiting of phlegm, or borborygmus and diarrhea. This is like food in a pot without fire; it cannot be cooked all day, let alone digested. *Jisheng Fang*'s Ershen Wan treats diarrhea due to Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold by using Psoraleae Fructus (Buguzhi) to tonify the Kidney and Myristicae Semen (Roudoukou) to tonify the Spleen. Although these two herbs both have tonifying properties, they lack the ability to regulate and rotate (woturn). Often, Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Muxiang) is added to smooth the Qi flow, enabling it to rotate within the empty granaries. Only when the granaries are empty can they receive food. This method has proven effective repeatedly and must not be ignored. Formerly, Grand Commandant Zhang Shou of the Tang Dynasty served in Guangzhou and found this prescription effective, writing a poem: "For three years, seasons passed at the border; only then did people believe in the extraordinary power of the medicine. Seizing the spring light into hand, do not let young beauties laugh at white beard hairs." I believe this is only suitable for those whose constitution is Yin-predominant with insufficient Mingmen Fire, lower Yuan deficiency-cold, and all symptoms belonging to deep-seated cold. For those with Yang-predominant constitutions and dry-heat in the intestines and stomach, it would instead cause harm. It depends on whether the individual's constitution is suitable or not; regarding it as a drying poison is a fallacy. I often use this herb combined with Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) to treat upward deviation of Original Qi with pulse floating or sinking and powerless, regardless of Yin or Yang classification, and it has verified effectiveness repeatedly. Thus, it is known as an excellent drug for guiding Qi back to its source and warming/tonifying True Yang. *Bencao Gangmu* records: Flavor pungent, greatly warm, non-toxic, incompatible with Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), contraindicated with Brassicae Napus Var. Viridis (Yuntao) and various blood products, works well with Juglandis Semen (Hetao) and Sesami Fructus (Huma). Hence the proverb: "Psoraleae Fructus (Buguzhi) without Walnut is like a jellyfish without a crab (Xiu)."
