Diarrhea (Xie Zheng) is mostly due to deficiency (Xu), but there are also cases of excess (Shi) diarrhea. The symptoms of excess diarrhea include abdominal pain that cannot be pressed by hand, undigested food in the stool, sudden and profuse expulsion from the intestines, and a sensation of burning fire toxin around the anus. The urgency and tenesmus (Li Ji Hou Zhong) are very similar to dysentery (Li Ji), except for the absence of fish-mucus-like discharge and blood stasis. This condition arises when fire pathogen rides on water pathogen to rampage horizontally, with earth following water, coming like a overturning river and breaking sea; its momentum is difficult to suppress. If tea or water is consumed, it is immediately expelled; if rice food is eaten, it is quickly passed through, remaining unchanged as ingested. This seems to indicate failure of bladder Qi transformation (Pang Guang Hua Qi) and loss of control by the Spleen and Stomach (Pi Wei), with the large and small intestines completely losing their normal commands. If not treated appropriately, it will inevitably turn into a Yin syndrome (critical/cold condition) within three days and nights. Such cases are rare, one in ten thousand, and originally do not require detailed differentiation. However, since this disease exists in the world, how can I ignore it? People using Pi Yue Wan (Spleen Restriction Pill) also have good results, but it is ultimately not a fixed, unchangeable formula. I now specially transmit a formula to treat this condition, which is extremely effective, named Shou Pi Tang (Spleen Receiving Decoction). Take it once; if the stopping trend is not evident, take it again, and there will be no case that does not stop. It is a miraculous formula. As for diarrhea caused by deficiency syndromes, whether it is Spleen Deficiency Diarrhea, Intestine Deficiency Diarrhea, or Kidney Deficiency Diarrhea, the general treatment methods are roughly similar. Only for diarrhea originating from the Kidney Meridian, one must not only stop diarrhea but also tonify Water (Kidney Yin/Fluids) to stop diarrhea, which is difficult for people to understand. It is not that simply tonifying Water stops diarrhea directly; rather, Water must obtain Fire to generate. Therefore, tonifying Water requires tonifying Fire. Tonifying Fire means tonifying the Fire of the Ming Men (Gate of Life). Fire exists within Water; if only Fire is tonified, Fire will fly and scatter, failing to stop diarrhea. One must tonify Fire within Water so that Fire generates from Water, and Water stops due to Fire; this contains profound truth and is not arbitrary speculation. But how to differentiate the deficiency/excess nature of Spleen Deficiency Diarrhea, Intestine Deficiency Diarrhea, and Kidney Deficiency Diarrhea? Spleen Deficiency Diarrhea is characterized by an abdomen that prefers warmth and dislikes cold, ability to eat but inability to digest, sallow complexion, and lazy/tired limbs. This is the deficiency pattern of Spleen Deficiency Diarrhea. Use Zao Pi Zhi Liu Tang (Spleen Drying and Flow-Stopping Decoction); the formula consists purely of herbs that strengthen the Spleen and remove dampness, pleasing the Spleen's preference, so when Earth (Spleen) prospers, Water returns to its source. Intestine Deficiency Diarrhea presents with frequent rumbling or watery sounds in the abdomen, loose stools, and clear, long urination. For such diseases, it is also excellent to strengthen the Spleen and assist Qi, supplemented with herbs that solidify the Intestines, so diarrhea can be eliminated and Intestine Qi becomes prosperous enough to transport fluids and grains. Use Bu Chang Zhi Sheng Dan (Intestine Tonifying Supreme Pill). The brilliance of this formula lies in Lu Jiao Shuang (Deer Antler Glue Frost) descending to secure collapse; however, without assisting Ren Shen (Ginseng) to strengthen the Spleen, even using Lu Jiao Shuang is futile, merely securing collapse temporarily but unable to generate Qi at the critical moment of near-death, acting as a pillar in turbulent waters. Kidney Deficiency Diarrhea necessarily occurs with painful diarrhea two to five times between midnight (Zi hour) or early morning (Wu Geng), while the patient remains normal during the day. This is Kidney Diarrhea, named Da Xia Xie (Great Mass Diarrhea). If one merely uses Spleen/Stomach herbs to stop diarrhea, it will definitely not cure; one must use hot herbs to warm the Ming Men (Gate of Life). Use Wen Shen Zhi Xie Tang (Kidney Warming and Diarrhea-Stopping Decoction). Although this formula tonifies the Kidney, it also tonifies the Spleen; tonifying the Kidney generates Fire, tonifying the Spleen generates Earth. The Qi of Fire and Earth generates, and the trend of Cold Water dissipates naturally; thus, without deliberate effort to stop diarrhea, the diarrhea stops itself.
